Harry Clifton Byrd (1889-1970) was president of the University of Maryland from 1935 to 1954. After his retirement he became chairman of the Tidewater Fisheries Commission and was involved with the revitalization of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. His papers relate mainly to the University of Maryland, its buildings, lands, governing bodies, and programs. Other subjects documented include the Defense Orientation Conference Association, Far East Command, and state elections. Byrd's papers are comprised of statistics, reports, minutes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and a scrapbook.

The collection documents Johnson's career as Assistant Secretary of War, 1937-40, President Roosevelt's personal representative to India, 1942, & Secretary of Defense, 1949-50. It consists chiefly of correspondence but also contains memoranda, appointment schedules, speeches, press releases, cartoons, photographs, maps & charts, phonograph records & movies of speeches, scrapbook & relevant printed material. National defense is the chief topic, specifically Johnson's concern for a larger air force and industrial mobilization before World War II, and armed forces unification and reduced military expenditures after the war. Of interest are case files of topics and problems Johnson tackled while Assistant Secretary, his annual reports, 1937-39, testimony during the Senate (MacArthur) hearings on Korea, papers regarding the decision to intervene in Korea, and summaries of Defense staff meetings, 1950. Many files are devoted to routine political and administrative matters such as appointments, patronage, invitations, his interest in the American Legion, and the Bohemian Club of San Francisco. The India material was generated by Johnson's mission to determine how the U.S. could aid Indian war production. Letters from Jawaharlal Nehru and other leaders discuss Indian independence, defense of the subcontinent, Gandhi's civil disobedience and Indian minority problems. John S. Service papers, 1925-1999

Title: John S. Service papers

The John S. Service Papers, 1925-1999, document the life experiences of "Jack" Service, a member of the United States Foreign Service who was posted to China during the 1930s and 1940s, and later accused of "losing China to the Communists." As one of the "Old China Hands," Service was implicated in the Affair and arrested. Although he was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing, Service was repeatedly accused of questionable loyalty to the United States, and dismissed. His reinstatement and public exoneration are covered, as is his subsequent career as a China specialist at the University of California, Berkeley. Hench Walter Reed Yellow Fever Collection documents the work of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission, the legacy of the commission’s discoveries, the lives of individuals who were connected to the commission, and twentieth century campaigns to shape public memory of the commission. Items in the collection date from 1800 to 1998, with the bulk of the items dating from 1864 to 1974. A wide range of formats are represented in the collection including, but not limited to the following: articles, artifacts, audiocassettes, bills (legislative records), biographies, charts (graphic documents), correspondence, diaries, editorials, interviews, journals (periodicals), magazines, maps, medical records, military records, negatives (photographic), notes, photographs, reports, reprints, scrapbooks, and speeches. Millard E. Tydings (1890-1961), a graduate of the Maryland Agricultural College and the University of Maryland Law School, and subsequently a member of the University's Board of Regents, rose through the ranks of Maryland politics to serve with distinction in both the U.S. House and Senate. The majority of documents in the collection are contemporaneous with Tydings' 24 years in the U.S. Senate (1927-1951) and, although there are some personal and business papers, political campaigns and issues are the primary focus of the collection. Significant issues documented include the Philippine Islands; the Committee on Un-American Activities; disarmament; and the need for a balanced budget. Correspondence, committee reports, memoranda, and publications, by Tydings and others, represent the majority of document types.

Title: Arthur E. Scott photograph collection

This collection contains photographs taken by Arthur E. Scott, a photojournalist and photo-historian for the U.S. Senate. It contains over 5,000 prints and negatives of United States politicians (mainly Senators), political events such as campaigns and inaugurations, and landmarks throughout the Washington, D.C. area, from the mid-1930s to the 1970s. There are also 27 scrapbooks compiled by Arthur E. Scott, primarily consisting of newspaper clippings of Scott's photographs. The collection also contains photographs from the 1910s and 1920s that were taken by other photographers. The collection contains prints and film negatives in various sizes, as well as glass plate negatives.

Service Papers, 1925-1999, document the life experiences of "Jack" Service, a member of the United States Foreign Service who was posted to China during the 1930s and 1940s, and later accused of "losing China to the Communists." As one of the "Old China Hands," Service was implicated in the Affair and arrested. Although he was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing, Service was repeatedly accused of questionable loyalty to the United States, and dismissed. His reinstatement and public exoneration are covered, as is his subsequent career as a China specialist at the University of California, Berkeley. Tydings (1890-1961), a graduate of the Maryland Agricultural College and the University of Maryland Law School, and subsequently a member of the University's Board of Regents, rose through the ranks of Maryland politics to serve with distinction in both the U.S. House and Senate. The majority of documents in the collection are contemporaneous with Tydings' 24 years in the U.S. Senate (1927-1951) and, although there are some personal and business papers, political campaigns and issues are the primary focus of the collection. Significant issues documented include the Philippine Islands; the Committee on Un-American Activities; disarmament; and the need for a balanced budget.
