Frank Damrosch was born Franz Heino Damrosch in Breslau, the son of Leopold Damrosch. A choral conductor, composer, and educator, he founded the Musical Art Society of New York and the Institute of Musical Art which became affiliated with the Juilliard School of Music.

The Institute of Musical Art (IMA) was founded by Frank Damrosch and James Loeb in 1905.

It affiliated with the Juilliard Graduate School in 1926 to form the Juilliard School of Music (now The Juilliard School); the two schools maintained separate staffs, faculties and student bodies until their full merger in 1946. Damrosch served as Director of the IMA, 1905-1926, Dean, 1926-1933 and Dean Emeritus, 1933-1937.
