The Institute of Musical Art was founded in 1905 by Frank Damrosch. The Juilliard Musical Foundation was founded in 1920 through the legacy of Augustus D. Juilliard. In 1923 the Juilliard Musical Foundation bestowed an endowment for the Juilliard Graduate School, which in 1926 with the Institute of Musical Art, became the Juilliard School of Music.
