Joseph Brant was a Mohawk Chief and an officer in the British military during the American Revolutionary War. He was born in Ohio and named Thayendanegea. He served in expeditions during the French and Indian War. As a Captain during the American Revolution, he led the four Iroquois Nations that \sided with the British as well as a group of loyalists. He married three times, lastly to Catharine Adonwentishon. Brant worked as a negotiator for the Six Nations in talks with the British to provide tracts of land for the Mohawk Reservation on the Grand River in Ontario. Brantford, Ontario; a city located on a portion of his land grant, is named for him.

Sir John Johnson, Bart. was born in the Mohawk Valley, but left for Canada because of his loyalist sympathies. He commanded two battalions of the King's Royal Regiment during the American Revolution. In 1783 he was appointed as the Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs in British North America.

Mohawk chief also known as Thayendanegea.

Associated with the Johnson family of Indian superintendents, Joseph Brant supported the British during the American Revolution and led numerous raids against New York and Pennsylvania settlements. Following the war Brant failed in attempts to negotiate favorable treaties with the new U.S. government and obtained from the British for the Iroquois a large land grant on the Grand River in Ontario. Moving his people there, Brant lobbied for their rights and looked after their welfare.
