John Langdon Sibley (1804-1885) served as Harvard's Assistant Librarian from 1825 to 1826 and 1841 to 1856, Librarian from 1856 to 1877, and Librarian, Emeritus from 1877 to 1885. He was the editor of the Harvard Triennial Catalogue from 1839 to 1875 and of the Harvard Quinquennial Catalogue from 1875-1885. A noted biographer, Sibley is best known for his "Biographical Sketches of Graduates of Harvard University", an extensive collection of biographical material on Harvard graduates. Sibley was born in Union, Maine, attended Harvard (AB 1825, Grad. Div. S. 1828), and was an ordained pastor of the First Church at Stow, Massachusetts (1829-1837).

Harvard librarian, born in Union, Maine. He graduated Harvard in 1825 and entered the divinity-school. Worked in the library while attending school and after pastoring a church for four years and then working as an editor he was appointed assistant librarian of the Harvard Library in 1841 and in 1856 librarian. He remained in that position until he retired in 1877. The library holdings increased greatly due to his persistent appeals for printed material and increased funding.
