Edward was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert, enjoying a long tenure as Prince of Wales before becoming king after his mother's death in 1901. The Queen did not have confidence in her son, and thus he acquired very little political experience as Prince. However, he proved to be a capable and popular ruler, aside from continued sexual indiscretions.

Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later Edward VII of the United Kingdom, was chairman of the Longfellow Memorial Fund responsible for placing a bust of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in Poets Corner, Westminster Abbey. The bust was by Thomas Brock, ARA.
