In 1878 he joined the orchestra of the Leipzig opera under Nikisch, and in 1889 followed him to Boston to play in the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After Nikisch left the BSO to return to Germany in 1895, Gruenberg became head of the violin department at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he remained for the rest of his life.
