Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Department of Education.
Since 1985, the Houston and Harris County Public Library systems have collaborated with the MFAH to bring small museum exhibitions to library branches throughout the Houston area. Exhibitions documented in these files have included Native American ceramics, animals in ancient Mesoamerican art, photographs of contemporary African-American life, and works of art from colonial America. The MFAH Department of Education also participates in a wide range of community festivals and events throughout Houston. Since 1996, the MFAH and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department have collaborated to produce murals at five parks throughout the city. In addition, since 1988, the MFAH and Rice University School of Continuing Studies have cosponsored courses related to the museum's special exhibitions, or related to specific aspects of art history.

Ruth Pershing Uhler served as the first Curator of Education at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (1950?-1979). She was followed by Chairperson Celeste Adams (1979-1984), Director Robert Roman (1984-1986) and Director Beth Schneider (1986-2007). The department plans and implements educational offerings such as exhibitions, symposia, lectures, performances, family and school programs. It also runs programs for interns, including the Minority Internship Program (MINT) which was established in 1990, then expanded to all applicants while maintaining an emphasis on diversity in 1997.

Bayou Bend, MFAH's American decorative arts museum, was donated by its owner, Ima Hogg, in 1957. It opened to the public in 1966. The first class of Bayou Bend Docent was selected in 1961. In June 1991, Bayou Bend closed for a two-year renovation. During the renovation, the Bayou Bend Museum of Americana at Tenneco kept a portion of the collection on public view.
