Biographical History
Since 1985, the Houston and Harris County Public Library systems have collaborated with the MFAH to bring small museum exhibitions to library branches throughout the Houston area. Exhibitions documented in these files have included Native American ceramics, animals in ancient Mesoamerican art, photographs of contemporary African-American life, and works of art from colonial America. The MFAH Department of Education also participates in a wide range of community festivals and events throughout Houston. Since 1996, the MFAH and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department have collaborated to produce murals at five parks throughout the city. In addition, since 1988, the MFAH and Rice University School of Continuing Studies have cosponsored courses related to the museum's special exhibitions, or related to specific aspects of art history.
The Department of Education records docent training as well as staff lectures, maintains copies of audio tours, and often also obtains copies of new media about the MFAH.
The Correspondence Files document the work of the department under Celeste Adams (1979-1984), Robert Roman (1984-1986) and Beth Schneider (1986-2007).
Ruth Pershing Uhler served as MFAH's first Curator of Education, 1954-1979.
