Frank Richard Stockton was an American short story writer, editor, and humorist. Initially apprenticed as a wood engraver, Stockton began writing popular stories for children, characterized by whimsical good humor, inventiveness, and a strong sense that even the most fantastic land was governed by its own reality. Stockton is perhaps best remembered for his work as editor of the children's magazine St. Nicholas and for the classic moralistic short story, The Lady or the Tiger.

Frank Stockton was born April 5, 1834 in Philadelphia, PA, and died April 16, 1902 in Washington, D.C. He was a wood engraver, editor, and author of short stories and novels for children and adults, known for his humor and irony.
