Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party
Variant namesHistory notes:
The Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) was organized during the summer of 1964 by members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and other participants of the Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964. The MFDP attempted in August 1964 to secure delegate representation at the Democratic National Convention because the Mississippi Democratic Party had included a clause rejecting civil rights and opposing the national party's commitment to that cause. The activities of the MFDP promoted greater interest among many civil rights activists for the creation of a stronger independent black organization with the civil rights movement.
