Born in North Carolina, Porter moved to Texas in 1882, eventually settling in Austin where he was variously employeed as a clerk, bookkeeper, a draftsman at the Texas General Land Office, a bank teller, and a publisher of a weekly humor newspaper.
In 1898 he was convicted of embezzlement of funds from the Austin bank. While in prison he began writing, using the pseudonymn "O. Henry." After his release in 1902, he went to New York to continue writing. There he produced more than one hundred short stories before his death in 1910.
