Van der Weyde was a photographer by profession, specializing in portraits and night photography. He was active in the Thomas Paine National Historical Association and was secretary, 1909-1914, and president, 1914-1929; and was the author of a ten-volume study on Paine, THE LIFE AND WORKS OF THOMAS PAINE. Van der Weyde published poetry under the pseudonym of William Manley.
