Agriculturalist, educator, politician, and writer. Author of numerous books and articles dealing with agricultural and educational subjects. In addition, he wrote the Life and times of Thomas Jefferson (1858). He held several political and governmental positions including Cortland County (N.Y.) Superintendent of Schools, 1843-1847 and New York Secretary of State, 1852-1853. His principle residence was near Cortland, N.Y.
