Spofford was born in Calais, Maine; she was educated in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. With encouragement from Thomas W. S. Higginson she wrote short stories that appeared in periodicals. She published her first novel, Sir Rohan's ghost, in 1860 and continued to write and publish until her death--novels, poems, essays, stories and travel writings. She married Richard Smith Spofford in 1865, a Boston lawyer and sometime author.

Harriet Elizabeth Spofford (1835-1921) of Newburyport, Mass., was a prolific writer of fiction and poetry for periodicals and magazines in the late nineteenth century. Among her publications are Sir Rodney's Ghost, 1860, and Azarian: An Episode, 1864. She married Richard Smith Spofford, Jr. ( -1888) in 1865 and lived for a while in Washington, D.C., subsequently establishing a home on Deer Island, near Newburyport.
