Biographical notes:
The United States Army's Geographical Surveys West of the 100th Meridian was headed by Lieutenant George M. Wheeler. Although this survey was merged into the United States Geological Survey in 1879, Wheeler continued to supervise publication of results of his survey until his retirement in 1888.
