Richard Doddridge Blackmore was an English novelist and poet, Blackmore wrote several novels and many volumes of poetry, but is chiefly known for the historical romance Lorna Doone (1869) set on Exmoor.

Richard Doddridge Blackmore (1825-1900) was an English poet, novelist and translator. Though he initially trained as a lawyer, Blackmore retired due to poor health and worked instead as an educator, a gardener and a writer. His best known works include Lorna Doone: a romance of Exmoor and The Maid of Sker. A large portion of his work was written under the pseudonym "Melanter."
