Luke Fildes was a particularly successful Victorian artist. His early work in Graphic magazine led to an invitation from Dickens to illustrate The Mystery of Edwin Drood. He gradually gave up illustration for painting, and became an acclaimed portrait painter in England. His subjects included several members of the royal family. Fildes' work is distinguished by his devotion to realism and social compassion.
