Publisher and artist, pioneer of art publishing in Australia. Publisher of quarterly, Art in Australia, he also wrote books on Australian artists, including Streeton, Lambert, Grüner and Heysen. President of Society of Artists, 1921-1948. He received an OBE for service to art in 1937.

Eldest son of John and Catherine Ure Smith. He founded the publishing house of "Art in Australia" in 1916. In addition to the quarterly art magazine of that name he produced a number of works on the work of Australian artists, until the sale of the company in 1934.
