Law School (1914); asst. to Secretary of the Interior, 1913-15; asst. attorney, US Dept. of the Interior, 1915-17; co-founded US National Park Service with Steven Mather, 1916; asst. director, US National Park Service, 1917-19; first superintendent of Yellowstone National Park, 1919-29; second director, US National Park Service, 1929-33; vice-president and general manager, US Potash Company, 1933-46; awards received include UC Alumnus of the Year (1952), American Forestry Assn. Distinguished Service Award (1968), Audubon Medal (1969), Medal of Freedom (1980); died in 1987.
