George Meany (1894-1980) was elected president of the American Federation of Labor (A.F. of L.) in 1952. His efforts to unite his organization with its rival, the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), was successful, and he was elected president of the merged organization, the AFL-CIO, in 1955. He was a vigorous anti-communist and an outspoken member of the Democratic Party, who, by virtue of his office, wielded considerable influence in the party.
