This collection consists of a letter written from Covington, Kentucky, on Nov. 1, 1858, by J.W. Stevenson to James Littlepage, Jr. of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. The letter concerns Stevenson's possible run as the Democratic candidate for governor. This was printed in the FRANKFORT YEOMAN, but Stevenson denied having the desire to run. He endorsed Beriah Magoffin for the position instead. Stevenson did express a wish to represent Kentucky as a senator in Washington, but would support whomever the Democrats nominate.

Shelby; European travels; U.S. and Virginia politics; and his service in the Confederate Army. This collection is comprised of thirteen letters, eleven of which John C. Nobel wrote to S.I.M. Major between October 26, 1866, and November 11, 1870. Of the remaining two letters, one was written by Nobel to Capt. William Lindsey and the other was written by Edward Nobel to his father, John C. Nobel. There are three major themes that run through the letters. First, Nobel discusses Kentucky's political climate during these Reconstruction years. Nobel, from Paducah, is continually writing to Major, in Frankfort, about what support for the Democratic Party could be delivered from the western part of the state. "Private" opinions are expressed in these letters, with many predications for the upcoming elections being made by Nobel. The second theme in the letters has to do with a debt of $500 that Nobel owes to the Bank of Louisville. Nobel asks to borrow money from Major, using part of the profits from his newspaper and from his position as State Binder to pay off the loan. Apparently, Major initially agreed to the arrangement, but either by design or circumstance was unable to fulfill the loan. A number of the letters concern the debt, the lack of payment on Major's part, and Nobel's dire financial straits.

George P. Garrett (1929-2008) was a poet, editor, author, and professor of English. The papers of George P. Garrett span the years 1929 to 2000 with the bulk of the material being dated between 1960 and 1990. The papers were initially collected and assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart T. Wright. Wright published a number of Garrett's works at his Palaemon Press and also assembled the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (see related materials held by the Rubenstein Library). Additional materials were received by the Library directly from George Garrett. The papers document Garrett's literary career as an author of novels, short stories, poetry, and dramatic works (including filmscripts) and the tremendous influence he had as an English professor and an editor on an entire generation of writers, particularly in the South. Correspondence with numerous authors, publishers, and educators offers much information about the history of 20th-century Southern literature, publishing, and literary education. The collection is divided into the Writings Series (with subseries of Writings by Garrett, Writings Edited by Garrett, Writings by Others, and Proofs); the Correspondence Series (with 5 subseries of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence); the Audiovisual Material Series; and the Miscellaneous Papers Series.
