Mary Margaret Truman Daniel (February 17, 1924 – January 29, 2008) was an American classical soprano, actress, journalist, radio and television personality, writer, and New York socialite. She was the only child of President Harry S. Truman and First Lady Bess Truman. While her father was president, during the years 1945 to 1953, Margaret regularly accompanied him on campaign trips, most notably the 1948 extensive countrywide train-borne 'Whistle-stop' campaign trip, which lasted several weeks; she also appeared often at important White House and political events during those years. She was a favorite with the media.[1] After graduating from George Washington University in 1946, she embarked on a career as a coloratura soprano, beginning with a concert appearance with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1947. She appeared in concerts with orchestras throughout the United States and in recitals throughout the U.S. through 1956. She made recordings for RCA Victor, and made television appearances on programs like What's My Line? and The Bell Telephone Hour.[2] In 1957, Truman abandoned her singing career to pursue a career as a journalist and radio personality, when she became the co-host of the program Weekday with Mike Wallace. She also wrote articles as an independent journalist, for a variety of publications in the 1960s and 1970s. She later became the successful author of a series of murder mysteries, and a number of works on U.S. First Ladies and First Families, including well-received biographies of her father, President Harry S. Truman and mother Bess Truman. She was married to journalist Clifton Daniel, managing editor of The New York Times. The couple had four children, and were prominent New York socialites who often hosted events for the New York elite.[2] In 1942, she matriculated at George Washington University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi,[5] and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1946.[4] In June 1944, she christened the battleship USS Missouri at Brooklyn Navy Yard, and spoke again in 1986 at the ship's recommissioning. She studied singing with Estelle Liebling, the voice teacher of Beverly Sills, in New York City.[6] After classical vocal training, Truman's singing career began with a debut radio recital in March 1947, followed shortly thereafter with her professional concert debut with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She sang professionally for the next decade, appearing with major American orchestras and giving several national concert tours. Truman's full-length biography of her father, published shortly before his 1972 death, was critically acclaimed. She also wrote a personal biography of her mother and histories of the White House and its inhabitants (including first ladies and pets). Truman published regularly into her eighties. Novels From 1980 to 2011, 25 books in the Capital Crimes series of murder mysteries, most set in and around Washington, D.C., were published under Margaret Truman's name. Professional ghostwriter Donald Bain (1935-2017) acknowledged in the March 14, 2014 issue of Publishers Weekly that he had written "27 novels in the Margaret Truman Capital Crimes series (mostly bylined by Truman, my close collaborator – my name is on only the most recent entries, released after her death)."[17] On April 21, 1956, Truman married Clifton Daniel, a reporter for The New York Times and later its managing editor, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Independence; he died in 2000. They had four sons: Clifton Truman Daniel (born June 5, 1957), Director of Public Relations for Harry S Truman College.[20][21] William Wallace Daniel (May 19, 1959 – September 4, 2000), a psychiatric social worker and researcher at Columbia University. He died after being struck by a taxicab in New York City.[22] Harrison Gates Daniel (born 1963) Thomas Washington Daniel (born 1966) In later life, Truman lived in her Park Avenue home.[19] She died on January 29, 2008, in Chicago (to which she was relocating to be closer to her son Clifton). She was said to have been suffering from "a simple infection" and had been breathing with the assistance of a respirator.[23] Her ashes and those of her husband were interred in Independence in her parents' burial plot on the grounds of the Truman Library.[24]

Title:
Papers, 1906-1971 (bulk 1945-1952).
Papers of Romine include photocopies of personal letters written by Harry S. Truman to two paternal first cousins, Myra E. Colgan (Myra Colgan Hornbuckle, called Polly, Romine's aunt) (38 items) and Mary V. Colgan (Mary Colgan Romine, Romine's mother) (26 items), documenting Truman's life as a farmer, U.S. senator, and president of the United States, as well as his lifelong affection for the recipients. The earliest letters in the collection, dating from 1906 to 1907, are the earliest personal handwritten Truman letters in the Library's holdings. Most of the letters, however, date from the period of 1945 to 1952. The collection also includes photocopies of letters from Truman to Romine, a few items written to the Colgans by Bess Truman and Margaret Truman, and Mary Colgan's lengthy handwritten account of her and her sister's attendance at President Truman's 1949 inauguration.

Koussevitzky, Serge, 1874-1951. Serge Koussevitzky Archive, 1920-1976 (bulk: 1924-1951)
Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

Audiovisual Collection. 1957 - 2006. Motion Picture Films Relating to the Administration, Family, and Personal Life of Harry S. Truman, 1934 - 1978.
The series comprises films made between 1934 and 1978. Almost all of the films are black and white. The series includes films of President Harry S. Truman giving speeches, participating in ceremonies, and traveling; newsreels depicting Harry S. Truman and events of his presidency; documentaries, including the 26-part television series entitled "Decision: The Conflicts of Harry S. Truman;" outtakes from the "Decision" television series; and interviews and program appearances, including Harry S. Truman's appearance on such programs as "The Jack Benny Show" in 1959 and his interviews with his daughter, Margaret Truman in 1955, with Edward R. Murrow in 1958, and with David Susskind in 1960. The series also includes films of several television appearances by Margaret Truman on such programs as the "Jimmy Durante Show." The earliest film in the collection depicting Harry S. Truman is a home movie shot in 1934; it shows a family dinner on December 19 in honor of Senator-elect Truman. Only one other film shows Harry S. Truman as a U.S. senator. Seven films show him as President; and over 215 films date from the years following his presidency. The last substantive film depicting Harry S. Truman is of a presentation to him in 1966 of the first Medicare card by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Very few films depict Bess Truman in a substantive way. The most important film showing her is a "Person-to-Person" program from 1955, in which Margaret Truman interviews her mother and father.

Rayburn served as a Texas legislator from 1906 to 1912, when he was elected to the United States Congress. He was elected House majority leader, Democratic Party, in 1937, holding that position until 1940 when he was named Speaker of the House. He continued in that office until his death in 1961, except for two periods of Republican control when he served as minority leader. Truman, Harry S., 1884-1972. Harry S. Truman letters to Bess Wallace and Margaret Truman, 1910-1955.
Title:
Harry S. Truman letters to Bess Wallace and Margaret Truman, 1910-1955.
The collection consists of photocopies from microfilm of letters from Harry S. Truman to his wife Bess Wallace Truman and to his daughter Margaret Truman. The series, the Family Correspondence File, contains more than 1400 handwritten letters from Truman to Bess and Margaret, dating from 1910 to 1959. The Family Correspondence File is further divided into three subseries. The first, Correspondence from Harry S. Truman to Bess Wallace, contains the letters that Truman wrote to Bess prior to their marriage in 1919. These letters document their lengthy courtship, which began in earnest in 1910, when Truman was living on the family farm near Grandview, Missouri, and Bess was living with her mother in neighboring Independence. During Truman's military service in World War I, he wrote to her frequently from his training camp in Oklahoma, and later sent her many letters from overseas while he was stationed in France. The second subseries, Correspondence from Harry S. Truman to Bess Wallace Truman, contains the letters that Truman wrote to Bess during the course of their marriage. He wrote to her constantly (sometimes more than once a day) whenever they were apart for any length of time. Usually, this was when Truman was traveling, on reserve duty with the Army, or tending to official business in Washington while Bess was back home in Independence. Only a few letters in the subseries were written after the Trumans left the White House in 1953. The third subseries, Correspondence from Harry S. Truman to Margaret Truman, contains letters dating from 1927 to 1955. Truman began writing letters to Margaret even before she was old enough to read. There are more than one hundred letters to his daughter in the collection, and more than 1300 to his wife. This correspondence reveals many aspects of Truman's personality: his devotion to his family, his sense of humor, his sensitivity to criticism, and his determination to succeed. The Family Correspondence File includes some telegrams and postcards, as well as a number of letters that are misdated, dated only by a postmark, or undated. The series also contains copies or transcripts of letters from Truman to his wife that are filed elsewhere in Truman's papers. In some cases, only a typed transcript of the letter has survived.

Title:
New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

Kelly, Alberta Metcalf, 1899-1994. Papers of Alberta Metcalf Kelly, 1899-1994 (bulk 1920-1968).
Title:
Papers of Alberta Metcalf Kelly, 1899-1994 (bulk 1920-1968).
The papers consist primarily of correspondence, clippings, programs, photographs, memorabilia, and other records documenting Kelly's involvement in the Democratic Party, starting at the precinct level and extending to the state and national levels. They reflect in particular her service on the Iowa State Central Committee from 1944 to 1953, the Democratic National Committee from 1953 to 1968 and her contributions as a delegate to the Democratic NationalConventions during those years. The papers include clippings and photographs of Kelly with President Harry Truman, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Hubert Humphrey (with his correspondence), signatures of President and Margaret Truman, and the program from President John F. Kennedy's birthday celebration. Since Kelly routinely purged her correspondence files, there is little evidence in the papers of her political views or unique contributions other than an addition to a party platform calling for federal funding of public schools. Nevertheless, the collection reveals Kelly's constant and long-term contributions to Democratic state and national electoral politics. Also included in the collection are newspaper clippings and photographs of Clarence Metcalf, Kelly's brother, focusing on the Iowa Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation State Committee.

Wednesday, January 20, 1965, was Inauguration Day. In the morning the Johnson family attended an interdenominational church service led by the Reverend Billy Graham. Just after twelve noon, Chief Justice Earl Warren administered the oath of office to President Johnson, and Johnson delivered his inaugural address. After a luncheon at the Capitol, the Johnsons viewed the Inaugural Parade. In the evening the President and Mrs. Johnson attended balls at the Mayflower Hotel, the Statler Hilton Hotel, the National Guard Armory, the Shoreham Hotel, and the Sheraton-Park Hotel.
