Walter Crane was born in Liverpool on 15 Aug 1845, second son of the portrait painter Thomas Crane and his wife Marie née Kearsley. The family moved first to Torquay, and in 1857 to London. From 1859-62 Crane was apprenticed to the wood engraver William James Linton, although he studied painting at the same time.
In 1862 his painting 'The Lady of Shalott' was accepted by the Royal Academy. By the mid-1860s, Crane was illustrating children's books including coloured picture books designed in collaboration with Edmund Evans, including the series of 'Toy Books' Evans was producing for Routledge. Crane was influenced by the Aesthetic Movement and by Japanese prints, as well as the Pre-Raphaelites and in particular Edward Burne-Jones. By the 1870s, Crane was involved in decorative design including creating ceramics (for Wedgwood, Pilkington and Maw and Co.), wallpapers (for Jeffrey and Co.), and textiles as well as exhibiting paintings.
In 1881 he became friends with William Morris who was also influenced by Ruskin's ideas on beauty and utility in art and the dignity of the craftsman. Crane was instrumental in promoting the Art Worker's Guild, and became its first President in 1884. He later served for two periods as President of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. He joined the Socialist League in 1883. He acted as Director of the Manchester School of Art from 1893-1896, was appointed Art Director of Reading College in 1896, and was appointed Principal of the Royal College of Art in 1898. Crane published works on art, design and decoration, including 'The Decorative Illustration of Books' (1896), 'The Bases of Design' (1898), and 'Line and Form'. In addition, he collaborated with William Morris at the Kelsmcott Press on wood-engravings for publications including 'The Story of the Glittering Plain' (1894). As a painter, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, Dudley Art Gallery and the New Gallery amongst others. Important canvases include 'The Renaissance of Venus' (1877), 'The Bridge of Life' (1884), 'The Mower' (1891) and 'Neptune's Horses' (1893).
He married Mary Frances Andrews in 1871, and had two sons (one of whom was called Lionel) and a daughter (Beatrice). Crane died at Horsham on 14 March 1915, three months after his wife Mary had been killed by a train.

John Lane Company. Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
Title:
Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
The records of the John Lane Company comprise correspondence, readers' reports, manuscripts and proof copies, financial records, documents, and autobiographical materials. Series I of the John Lane Company Records comprises the correspondence and other records reflecting the activities of this firm, its officers and authors from 1856 to 1933, with the majority dating from 1894 to 1930. The correspondence is largely business-related, although the personal correspondence of John Lane is intermixed. Correspondents include Francis P. Barnard, Horace Bleackley, John Buchan, Walter Crane, Arthur Dasent, Richard and Edward Garnett, Kenneth Grahame, Constance Hill, Stephen Leacock, Vernon Lee, Richard Le Gallienne, William J. Locke, Alice and Wilfrid Meynell, Stephen Phillips, Margaret W. Roberts, Clement K. Shorter, Edward P. Stebbing, A. Francis Steuart, Frank Swettenham, Silvanus P. Thompson, Katrina Trask, William Watson, Theodore Watts-Dunton, and M. P. Willcocks. In addition to the large body of incoming correspondence, there is in the series a quantity of intramural correspondence by members of the firm covering the years 1898 to 1920. A small group of financial records and miscellaneous materials complete the series. The smaller Series II "Creative Work" embraces in the main a large number of readers' reports prepared for the firm between 1894 and 1930. There are no reports for the years 1909 to 1914 nor for 1917 to 1920, but otherwise the coverage appears comprehensive. Also present in this subseries is a small number of manuscripts by Lascelles Abercrombie, William Watson and others. Series III contains a small amount of material relating to John Lane the man. A short autobiographical sketch and notes which appear to be the beginning of a projected history of British art in India are contained in the series, along with fragments relating to Lane. As noted above, a significant amount of his personal correspondence is scattered through Series I.

Shields, Frederic, 1833-1911. Correspondence, ca. 1873-1909.
Title:
Correspondence, ca. 1873-1909.
Twenty three letters by Shields (ca. 1873-1909) together with sixteen letters received (1877-1909), mostly from British artists. Included are seventeen letters from Shields to Herbert P. Horne (ca. 1886-1897), editor of the "Century Guild Hobby Horse", a journal dedicated to the revitalization of the decorative arts. Shields discusses his relations with William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the poetry of Christina Rossetti, Horne's work, and the reproduction of works of art in the journal. In a later letter (1908), Shields acknowledges his debt to Rossetti, noting "Lovely was he, though weak and inconsistent as myself." Letters received include three from Sir Edward Poynter (1891, 1894), two from G. F. Watts (1891, 1901), two from Sir Hubert Von Herkomer (1877), and letters from Walter Crane (1909) and Noel Paton (1896). One of Poynter's letters (1891) mentions Burne-Jones and Millais. Watts states that, because of his lack of independent means, he has been obliged to paint portraits in order to live and this has impeded his true aspirations (1891). He also discusses Shields' designs for murals for the Chapel of the Ascension (1901). Herkomer's letters relate to lithography and his portrait of Richard Wagner and Paton's praises Shield's "Angel of the Chimes", mentions Eaton Hall, and comments on the death of Frederic Leighton. Arranged chronologically.

Crane, Walter, 1845-1915. Letters, 1871-1914.
Title:
Letters, 1871-1914.
Letters by Crane to various correspondents concerning his work, exhibitions, and personal matters. Of special interest are seven letters to Sir James Dromgole Linton discussing artistic matters, the Art Workers Guild, the South London Art Gallery, and the invention of a method of tapestry-painting in indelible colors (1884-1895); to Gleeson White on the effect of the camera on art (1893); and to Edmund Evans about printing colors (1884). In an extensive 7 p. letter to Henry Holiday Crane discusses Sir Ebenezer Howard's 'To-morrow: a peaceful path to social reform' (London, 1898). Crane expresses his ideas about planning a "garden city", the ideal of a planned residential community. Crane criticizes Howard's scheme as lacking the means to prevent the accumulation of capital in private hands and thus becoming a commercial enterprise. Letters concerning plans for exhibitions include one to T.J. Cobden-Sanderson about a possible combined Morris/Burne-Jones exhibition to be held by the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society (1898). With one letter from the Art editor of 'Black and White' apologizing for attributing Crane's 'The Bridge of Life' to George Fredrick Watts (1896). Arranged chronologically.
