Walter Crane was born in Liverpool on 15 Aug 1845, second son of the portrait painter Thomas Crane and his wife Marie née Kearsley. The family moved first to Torquay, and in 1857 to London. T.J. Cobden-Sanderson was an English bookbinder, associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. Born in Northumberland, his family travelled extensively; he attended Cambridge, but did not take a degree. William Rothenstein was born in 1872 in Bradford. He studied art at the Slade School 1888-9 and in Paris at the Académie Julian from 1889 - 1893.
