Walter Crane was born in Liverpool on 15 Aug 1845, second son of the portrait painter Thomas Crane and his wife Marie née Kearsley. The family moved first to Torquay, and in 1857 to London. Publisher. Tuer went to London in 1856 with the idea of becoming a doctor but was soon dissuaded of that profession and turned to a merchant's office. About 1862 he set up as a wholesale stationer and was joined the following year by Abraham Field, thus establishing the firm of Field and Tuer.
