Jonathan Trumbull Jr. (March 26, 1740 – August 7, 1809) was an American politician who served as the 20th governor of Connecticut and the second Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
Trumbull was born in Lebanon, Connecticut, the second son of Jonathan Trumbull Sr. (the eventual Governor of Connecticut) and his wife Faith Robinson, daughter of Rev. John Robinson. Trumbull graduated from Harvard College in 1759, and gave the valedictory address when he received his master's degree in 1762. His brother John Trumbull was a noted painter of the Revolution.
Carrying on the family's tradition of public service, Trumbull began with town and colony offices: lister, grand juror, surveyor of highways, justice of the peace, and selectman. In 1774 he was elected deputy, the first of seven terms representing Lebanon. He served in the state legislature three times; from 1774 to 1775, from 1779 to 1780, and in 1788, serving as Speaker of the House in 1788.
Trumbull served in the Continental Army as paymaster general of the Northern Department from July 28, 1775 to July 29, 1778. In February 1781, he was given the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was included in the general orders of June 8, 1781: "Jonathan Trumbull. Esqr., Junior, is appointed Secretary to the Commander in Chief and to be respected accordingly." He served for the duration of the war as aide-de-camp to General George Washington until December 28, 1783. After the war, he became an original member of the Connecticut Society of the Cincinnati.
Elected to the First, Second, and Third Congresses, Trumbull served in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1789 to March 3, 1795. He was the Speaker of the House in the Second Congress, both preceded and succeeded by Frederick A. C. Muhlenberg. He did not seek re-election for a fourth term and instead successfuilly ran for the United States Senate, serving from March 4, 1795 to June 10, 1796.
On June 10, 1796, he resigned from the United States Senate to become Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut. When the Governor died in December 1797, he became governor and was re-elected to eleven consecutive terms until his death in Lebanon, Connecticut.
He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1804.
Trumbull died August 7, 1809, aged 69 years and 134 days. He is interred at Trumbull Cemetery, Lebanon, Connecticut. He was one the original members of the board of trustees of Bacon Academy.

The Connecticut Society of the Sons of the American Revolution biography, Jonathan Trumbull, Jr., accessed July 23, 2020

Trumbull. the second son of Jonathan Trumbull. Sr., Connecticut’s famed Revolutionary War governor, attended Tisdale’s school in Lebanon and graduated in 1759 from Harvard where he ranked first socially and gave the salutatory address and the valedictory address for his M.A. Earlier in 1759 he joined his father and brother Joseph in a partnership and in 1767 took over the operation of his father’s store, which he and his brother David ran from 1784 to 1789.

He carried on the family’s tradition of public service beginning with town and colony offices: lister, grand juror, surveyor of highways, justice of the peace, and selectman. In 1774 he was elected deputy-the first of seven terms representing Lebanon. Prior to the Revolution he served on Lebanon’s committees of correspondence and safety. Like his father he displayed remarkable tenacity, industry, and efficiency in whatever position he held.

With the outbreak of war, Congress in 1775 appointed him paymaster for the New York Department, with the rank of colonel. After he resigned in 1778, Congress appointed him the first comptroller of the treasury, but he served for only six months. From June 1781 to August 1783 he served as military secretary for General Washington, who became a steadfast and intimate friend. This service with Washington enabled him to witness and participate in the British surrender at Yorktown.

After the war he was a charter member and secretary of the Connecticut Society of the Cincinnati which engendered charges of exclusivism. This, plus his support for commutation and his nationalist views put him in disfavor with his fellow townsmen who denied him election to public office until 1788 when he was elected to the first of four terms in the Federal House of Representatives, resigning in 1794 to take a seat as United States senator. Elected Connecticut’s lieutenant governor in 1796, in 1798 he was elected governor, a position he held until his death in 1809.

As governor, expounding ultraconservative Federalist principles, he had the difficult task of guiding Connecticut through a turbulent period. Like most ardent Federalists, he viewed revolutionary France as a grave threat. In October 1798 he warned legislators that “an intimate connection with a nation of infidels and atheists … is to be avoided as the worst of evils.” Obviously, he wanted no changes in Connecticut’s political and religious organizations. Beginning in 1800 the Jeffersonian Republicans ran a gubernatorial candidate against him each year, but he always won.

An uncompromising exponent of Federalism, he clearly perceived that Connecticut’s well-being was contingent on a strong union which would provide economic expansion and prevent another disastrous war. His intensely conservative policies as governor, enhancing the social, intellectual, and moral good of the people, provided the type of leadership preferred by most of Connecticut’s voters.

Trumbull, John, 1756-1843. Papers, 1790-1843.
Title:
Papers, 1790-1843.
Papers, 1790-1824, containing inventories, letter books, account books, and miscellaneous notes. One volume contains inventories of his engravings and his personal and household possessions, as packed in cases for shipment across the Atlantic in 1803, 1808, and 1813. The same volume contains results of his experiments with colors and paints, and formulas for making paints and varnishes, as well as reciptes for medicines and household cleaning substances. Another volume contains three small account books, two dealing with subscriptions for engravings made from his paintings, the third with proceeds and expenses of the exhibition in 1824 of his painting, the Resignation of General Washington, in various cities in the northeastern United States. A third volume contains accounts, letters and memoranda relating to the management of his lands in the Mount Morris tract of Genesee County (N.Y.). Many of the letters are written to James Wadsworth and Samuel M. Hopkins, apparently his agents there, and include instructions on the rental and management of the land; one letter contains an inventory of a shipment of fruit trees and ornamental trees for planting there, enumerating the different varieties. The volume also includes a narrative, dated 1805, of a subscription taken up to improve the road to Dr. Samuel Willard's house at Stafford Springs (Conn.), and accounts of expenditure on the work done. Some related papers are laid in to this volume. There are also two letter books, 1796-1802, and 1810-1817. The earlier volume deals mostly with his work as commissioner charged with settling the 7th article, relating to American claims, of the Jay treaty between the U.S. and Great Britain, although some letters include general discussions of politics and of his business affairs. Correspondents include Oliver Wolcott, John Jay, Rufus King, and his brother Jonathan Trumbull. The second volume includes 16 letters to Rufus King. Most of the letters in the later volume were written during 1811-1813, when Trumbull was in England. Many of them give his views on the War of 1812, particularly the impressment issue, including one to the Prime Minister, Spencer Perceval, another to Sir Robert Liston, and one which was published in the Morning Post. Other letters deal with business and personal affairs, including his detention in Britain as an enemy alien, and the career in the British Army of his natural son, John Trumbull Ray. There are also letters discussing American politics, and a strong attack on DeWitt Clinton. A list of correspondents accompanies the volume.

The records of the Huntington shipping business include ships papers for the sloop _Lydia_ for 1783, including instructions to the captain, statements of repairs, etc.; ships papers for the brig _Nancy_ for 1784 to 1786, including instructions to the captain, reports on each voyage, etc.; papers dealing with the brig _Ranger_ for 1775 to 1779, the _Norwich Packet_ for 1772 to 1782, and the Huntington shipping business from 1771 to 1786, including mostly items on repairs and supplies furnished various vessels. Many of the above items are scraps of paper. With the exception of a few items signed by his brother, Andrew Huntington (1745-1824), almost all items are made out to, or signed by, Joshua Huntington. In addition to these records, the collection also includes a folder of miscellaneous items, including the Norwich "Blue Laws," enforced by Isaac Huntington (1688-1764) as Justice of the Peace, from 1742 to 1758, and encompassing such crimes as swearing, playing cards, assault, etc. Various other documents, several signed by Jonathan Trumbull, Sr., and Jonathan Trumbull, Jr., are also included. Also included in this collection are two copies of the autograph dealer's catalog (William Todd, #99, June, 1939) where the papers were offered for sale and described in detail. One copy has marginal notes indicating which parts of the collection now belong to the AAS. Clippings from this list describing the contents of each folder have been included in each folder. Inclusive dates on Todd's list are often inaccurate. Most items are kept in the order of arrangement on Todd's list.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.
