Papers, 1742-1801.

This collection of Huntington papers, from 1742 to 1801, includes the records kept by Joshua in his role as agent of the Continental Army, the records of the Huntington shipping business, and miscellaneous papers. The Continental Army records include orders, receipts, contracts, bills, and letters for transportation of supplies for the Continental Army and for private concerns in and around Norwich, Conn., for hauling equipment, sick soldiers, and supplies to Norwich and New York, for the transportation of the Continental Army from Norwich to New York, including enumeration of equipment, ships, and their captains, for supplying soldiers with wood on their march from Boston to New York, for clothing and equipment of dead soldiers, for the purchase of corn and flour for the Continental Army, for the purchase of supplies by Huntington's agents, and for supplies and ammunition for the Army in Rhode Island and for the French Fleet. The records of the Huntington shipping business include ships papers for the sloop _Lydia_ for 1783, including instructions to the captain, statements of repairs, etc.; ships papers for the brig _Nancy_ for 1784 to 1786, including instructions to the captain, reports on each voyage, etc.; papers dealing with the brig _Ranger_ for 1775 to 1779, the _Norwich Packet_ for 1772 to 1782, and the Huntington shipping business from 1771 to 1786, including mostly items on repairs and supplies furnished various vessels. Many of the above items are scraps of paper. With the exception of a few items signed by his brother, Andrew Huntington (1745-1824), almost all items are made out to, or signed by, Joshua Huntington. In addition to these records, the collection also includes a folder of miscellaneous items, including the Norwich "Blue Laws," enforced by Isaac Huntington (1688-1764) as Justice of the Peace, from 1742 to 1758, and encompassing such crimes as swearing, playing cards, assault, etc. Various other documents, several signed by Jonathan Trumbull, Sr., and Jonathan Trumbull, Jr., are also included. Also included in this collection are two copies of the autograph dealer's catalog (William Todd, #99, June, 1939) where the papers were offered for sale and described in detail. One copy has marginal notes indicating which parts of the collection now belong to the AAS. Clippings from this list describing the contents of each folder have been included in each folder. Inclusive dates on Todd's list are often inaccurate. Most items are kept in the order of arrangement on Todd's list.
