The son of italian immigrants, Frank Sinatra began singing and doing impersonations in school which led to his future career as singer with the Hoboken Four in 1935. The quartet broke up in 1936 and Frank started working his way through the music industry until he finally got his big break in 1940. He would become one of Hollywood's leading men for the next two decades and a constant music hall draw after that until very close to the day he died in 1998. (Adapted from the Official Sinatra Family website).
Singer and actor.

Amateur Hour Collection, 1934-1948
Title:
Amateur Hour Collection 1934-1948
Primarily over 7000 applications from contestants who appeared on the Major Bowes' Original Amateur Hour radio program between 1934 and 1948. A small percentage of the administrative papers dating from the late 1940s and 1950s, as well as materials relating to the Mexican version of the program, La hora internacional del aficionado, are also included. Filed with the contestant applications are letters of introduction, reference letters, and other documents sent by prospective contestants. Applications from conventional performers such as musicians, dancers, singers, and impersonators are the most numerous, but also included are applications from novelty acts such as a human piccolo, a group of hand-standing singers, and a group who played harmonicas with fire extinguishers. Of particular interest are applications from various performers, now well-known, including Teresa Brewer, Stubby Kaye, Robert Merrill, Beverly Sills, and Frank Sinatra. Photographs from the 1940s and 1950s provide a visual record of the show, while correspondence to and from program staff members recount some of the program's business transactions. Scripts, promotional material, and advertising and sponsor documents also are part of the collection.

Bowes, Edward, Major, 1874-1946. Amateur hour collection, 1934-1948.
Title:
Amateur hour collection, 1934-1948.

The Mo Ostin Collection spans the years of 1961 to 1990, with the bulk of the collection dating between 1963 and 1980. The collection primarily consists of artist files kept by Ostin while he was a recording executive at Warner Brothers and Reprise Records. Significant artist files include Sammy Davis, Jr., Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, and Frank Sinatra. Other documents and items in the collection include photographs, legal papers, executive files, licenses, master purchases, appointment books, correspondence, events records, and information about publishers, agents, and managers. The Mo Ostin Collection provides a great deal of documentation on Ostin's role as vice president and chairman of a prominent and successful recording label. Seen in a broader context, his influence on the cultural history of rock music is shown through his relationships with many highly acclaimed artists, whom he helped develop and produce in their early stages. The papers and documents provide an in-depth look at the role of the record executive and the importance of maintaining relationships with artists and other professionals in the recording industry, for which Ostin is highly praised.

George P. Garrett Papers, 1929-2008, (bulk 1960-2000)
Title:
George P. Garrett Papers, 1929-2008 (bulk 1960-2000)
George P. Garrett (1929-2008) was a poet, editor, author, and professor of English. The papers of George P. Garrett span the years 1929 to 2000 with the bulk of the material being dated between 1960 and 1990. The papers were initially collected and assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart T. Wright. Wright published a number of Garrett's works at his Palaemon Press and also assembled the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (see related materials held by the Rubenstein Library). Additional materials were received by the Library directly from George Garrett. The papers document Garrett's literary career as an author of novels, short stories, poetry, and dramatic works (including filmscripts) and the tremendous influence he had as an English professor and an editor on an entire generation of writers, particularly in the South. Correspondence with numerous authors, publishers, and educators offers much information about the history of 20th-century Southern literature, publishing, and literary education. The collection is divided into the Writings Series (with subseries of Writings by Garrett, Writings Edited by Garrett, Writings by Others, and Proofs); the Correspondence Series (with 5 subseries of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence); the Audiovisual Material Series; and the Miscellaneous Papers Series.

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Title:
Ambassador Auditorium Collection 1974-1995
The Ambassador Auditorium Collection contains the files of the various organizational departments of the Ambassador Auditorium as well as audio and video recordings. The materials cover the entire time period of April 1974 through May 1995 when the Ambassador Auditorium was fully operational as an internationally recognized concert venue. The materials in this collection cover all aspects of concert production and presentation, including documentation of the concert artists and repertoire as well as many business documents, advertising, promotion and marketing files, correspondence, inter-office memos and negotiations with booking agents. The materials are widely varied and include concert program booklets, audio and video recordings, concert season planning materials, artist publicity materials, individual event files, posters, photographs, scrapbooks and original artwork used for publicity. Many of the print materials include handwritten comments from office personnel and administrators, and many of the artist photographs are autographed. Since the various office personnel maintained their own files, and the same information was often needed in more than one office at a time, the collection contains duplicate copies of many items. Although efforts were made to eliminate duplicate material from the same file or the same series, duplicate copies of items exist among the files from different offices. In an effort to maintain the original content of these files, the cross-file duplicate items were retained in the collection.

Eugene Earle Collection, 1939-1980s
Title:
Eugene Earle Collection, 1939-1980s
Eugene Earle was born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, in 1926. In addition to amassing a large collection of country and western, blues, and jazz sound recordings, he also became a discographer and a founder and president of the John Edwards Memorial Foundation (JEMF). Earle is also responsible for rediscovering and recording a number of country musicians, including Doc Watson, Jimmie Tarlton, and the Carolina Tarheels. The collection consists of recordings, films, images, and papers collected by Eugene Earle. The recordings consists of commercial and non-commercial transcription discs, audiocassettes, and open reel recordings documenting a wide array of radio programs and performers of blues, country music, jazz, old-time music, popular music, swing, and other types of music from 1939through the early 1980s. One series of the collection is government-sponsored Army V-Discs and Navy V-Discs from World War II. These discs were issued, October1943-May 1949, and feature material from a variety of sources, including special recording sessions, radio broadcasts, broadcast rehearsals, film soundtracks, and issued and un-issued commercial recordings. Along with the Armed Forces Radio Service, the V-Disc group was a morale-building unit that addressed the need for current music by the troops overseas. As V-Discs were produced exclusively for use by military personnel and the many artists who volunteered to perform on the recordings were adamant about the discs not being commercially sold or used, many of the V-Disc metal pressing parts were destroyed by the United States Army.Consequently, the V-Discs that survived document performances by artists unavailable on any other recordings. Other transcription discs are of the which aired on WSM radio in Nashville, Tenn.,1971-1974, and showcased some of the leading country music performers of the day;the ; and various government-sponsored radio shows, such as and Another series is comprised of open reel recordings, some documenting live performances of old time, country, and bluegrass musicians. They also include several private interviews with musicians. Other open reel recordings are dubbed copies of rare 78 rpm recordings, unreleased test recordings of early country and blues musicians, and transcription discs. There are also posters, audiocassettes, films, printed music, images, serials, papers relating to Earle's discographical and collecting activities, and promotional materials. Posters include full-sheet posters,half-sheet posters, and lobby cards for commercial feature-length motion pictures featuring country and western recording stars from the 1930s to the 1960s. Audiocassettes include commercial and non-commercial recordings of many early country, jazz, and Hawaiian musicians. Films consist of 16mm reels of early country and western artists and other topics. Printed music includes a number of song folios and sheet music, largely focused on Hawaiian and early country and western music, with a significant number of pre-1930 song sheets. Images consist of photographs, collectors' cards, and other images of country and western musicians and related subjects. Serials consist of journals and other publications pertaining to individual musicians, early radio stations, record collecting in general, fan clubs, and other topics. Papers relating to Earle's discographical and collecting activities include discographical research, tape logs, correspondence with record companies and other collectors, materials related to the John Edwards Memorial Foundation, record label catalogs, and extensive documentation of Earle's own vast record and research collection.
