Title:
Papers and photographs, 1891-1942 ; (bulk 1917-1918).
Correspondence between Beffel and his family in Milwaukee, Wis. spanning his service as a doctor with Base Hospital 22 both stateside and in France. Writing to his children, John and Eulalie, he describes a military parade in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), medical training, pride of their work for the war effort, and a bit about medical care. Letters to his wife touch upon attending a briefing on the war's progress, serving with English soldiers, and reassurances that he is thinking of his family. Correspondence from his children discuss people from home entering the service, changes in the city and their lives, the influenza epidemic, and thanks for sending gifts. The collection also includes promotional certificates, a humorous poem about Beffel's contributions to curing tuberculosis, and several essays written while he was a student at the University of Wisconsin. Eulalie served with the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAACs) during World War II. Found are her identification card and a letter discussing conditions in England. There are several photographs including one of Eulalie in uniform, an aerial view of Madison (Wis.), and one of a non-military kitchen.

Thompson, Lloyd W. Correspondence, 1944-1946.
Title:
Correspondence, 1944-1946.
The collection includes 173 letters that Mrs. Lloyd W. (Lillian Jenetta) Thompson received from her husband, Lloyd. 165 of the letters were written in 1945 and eight were written in 1946. Lloyd wrote them in North Carolina, where he was stationed either at the Prisoner of War Camp of Fort Butner or Hendersonville. He functioned as Motor Sargeant of the Motor Pool most of the time from Feb. 1945 through Jan. 1946. Lloyd always wrote of missing Lillian, wishing to be discharged, of his friends and officers in the army, of working on and driving various vehicles, of their baby, of life in the barracks, of prostitutes and drinking in town and at parties, of the arrest of prostitutes and GIs caught with them in Durham, and of the point system by which U.S. soldiers were dismissed from duty. Mostly, Lloyd wrote of the prisoners of war, who were all Germans until November 23, 1945 when French, Czech, Polish and Dutch prisoners were added to the camps. He noted the weekly American movies they watched, the crops they harvested, POW escapes, a tunnel and bomb they created, searching them, transporting them, what they ate, changes in their status and privileges after VE Day, how his truck drivers occassionally hit POWs, and how local farmers and pulp wood manufacturers fought Washington, D.C. to extend the time they could employ POWs. (The deadline originally was Jan. 1, 1946, but this was extended through the end of March.) Lloyd was assigned to clean out side POW camps and eventually Camp Butner. His dismissal was delayed until the camp was nearly emptied, at which point he collected supplies for his wife and himself (new shoes, wool trousers, a jacket, soap, and towels) and shipped them home. He also noted others, particularly civilians, who were caught sneaking into POW areas and, later, civilians who stole camp supplies. Also included in the collection are letters Lillian received from female relatives and friends, including two from her mother-in-law, Mrs. M. Thompson, in 1944 and 1945; one from a friend Cpl. Abbigail Balgooyen; two from her sister, Ella Jannetta, in Durham, N.C., in 1945; two from Thompson relatives, Mary Ellen, and Bob, Helen & Kids; and a congratulatory baby card from two friends, all dated 1945. Most of these letters are pretty general in nature and brief, inquiring about Lillian and the baby, Lloyd being gone, and noting the health and activities of mutual friends and family members. Of special note is the letter from Lillian's friend, Cpl. Abbigail Balgooyen, dated June 20, 1944. Abbigail was a member of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (a WAAC) stationed "Somewhere in England". Her letter vividly describes the extremely uncomfortable living conditions in her "camp", which included straw mattresses (bolsters), "cell" like rooms, and having no pillows. She had had measles, which delayed her being sent to England. A U.S. World War II Army Enlistment Record of Lloyd W. Thompson (copy) is included. The letters are all handwritten, mostly in ink, a few in pencil, on various types and sizes of paper. A few of the letters are acidic and yellowed. Two photographs are included, one of an old man and two young boys and one of Lloyd, who has his back towards the camera. An inventory of the letters is also included.

Ray, Rose, 1918-. Oral history interview with Rose F. (Jrolf) Ray, [sound recording], 2008.
Title:
Oral history interview with Rose F. (Jrolf) Ray, [sound recording], 2008.
Rose F. Ray, née Jrolf, discusses her World War II service in the Army as a cook in Alliance, Nebraska and a mess sergeant at Sedalia Army Air Field. Ray talks about her parents' immigration from Brazil and her childhood in Racine and Milwaukee (Wisconsin). After high school, she touches on working at Allis Chalmers and enlisting in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. Sent to Daytona Beach (Florida), Ray speaks of attending cooks and bakers school and dehydration school, living in tents, and being spooked by Florida wildlife. She tells of once being assigned as assistant mess sergeant and, after cooking for and feeding 700 women, being so stiff and tired that she couldn't work the next day. Admitted to the regular Army in 1943, she contrasts her civilian and military paychecks. Assigned to Alliance (Nebraska) as a cook, Ray addresses living conditions, helping cook at a WAC mess hall, and homesickness. Promoted to staff sergeant, she tells of being assigned to Sedalia Army Air Field (Missouri) to discipline a kitchen staff that was not working well together. Ray mentions having to demote someone, the improvement in attitude of her staff, and doing all the holiday cooking with the other officers. Ray addresses keeping her mess hall clean, organizing women to hand-sew curtains, and writing letters home. She details meeting and dating Fred Ray, her future husband, who delivered food to her kitchen as a quartermaster. After getting orders to go to India, she tells of going home on furlough and getting mail from Fred. She describes marrying Fred six weeks after her furlough and recalls how angry the officer in charge was when Ray asked to cancel her trip overseas. Ray talks about living in a rented room off-base with her new husband, being discharged only two days apart from each other, and going home to Milwaukee. She talks about other family members who were also in the military during the war, describes her and her husband's adjustment to civilian life, and mentions the military had offered her rifle training, which she refused. Ray states her most memorable day of service was when she carried the flag in Florida.

Guide to the Diary of 1st Lieutenant Thomas A. Kindre (Rutgers College, Class 1942): Service in Army 34th Division in World War II North Africa/Italy Theaters, June 3, 1943-May 6, 1944
Title:
Guide to the Diary of 1st Lieutenant Thomas A. Kindre (Rutgers College, Class 1942): Service in Army 34th Division in World War IINorth Africa/Italy Theaters, June 3, 1943-May 6, 1944
The diary of Thomas. Kindre records the personal observation. The diary is a significant document in that Kindre was not only a college graduate, but an officer. Although some parts resemble those found in diaries of his fellow soldiers, his comparatively more erudite style of writing is apparent. Kindre was more interested in developing a scenic narrative than a record of his routine activities. Moreover, his journalism major in college probably influenced not only on his writing style, but his observations, interpretations, and reasons for recording certain experiences during his tour.
