Correspondence between Beffel and his family in Milwaukee, Wis. spanning his service as a doctor with Base Hospital 22 both stateside and in France. Writing to his children, John and Eulalie, he describes a military parade in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), medical training, pride of their work for the war effort, and a bit about medical care. Letters to his wife touch upon attending a briefing on the war's progress, serving with English soldiers, and reassurances that he is thinking of his family. Correspondence from his children discuss people from home entering the service, changes in the city and their lives, the influenza epidemic, and thanks for sending gifts. The collection also includes promotional certificates, a humorous poem about Beffel's contributions to curing tuberculosis, and several essays written while he was a student at the University of Wisconsin. Eulalie served with the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAACs) during World War II. Found are her identification card and a letter discussing conditions in England. There are several photographs including one of Eulalie in uniform, an aerial view of Madison (Wis.), and one of a non-military kitchen.
