In 1921, the Pennsylvania Museum of Art (later renamed the Philadelphia Museum of Art) held a special loan exhibition of colonial silver, mostly American pieces, with some European ones. A catalog of the exhibit was published as Bulletin number 68 in June 1921. There are no clues as to who assembled this special volume.
Art museum; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Est. 1876 as the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art. In 1929 the name changed to the Pennsylvania Museum of Art, and in 1938 to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and School of Industrial Art. Dalton Dorr served as director, 1876-1904. Fiske Kimball was director 1925-1954.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art was founded in 1876, just after the close of the United States Centennial Celebration. While a Public Relations office has long been part of its organizational structure, the Museum did not designate a formal office of Marketing until 1994. That year's annual report noted for the first time a joint Marketing and Public Relations department operated by a staff of seven. Sandra Horrocks, who joined the Museum as its manager of public relations in 1971, headed the newly formed department. Other staff included Charlotte Biddle as Manager of Special Events, and Kristen B. Batley as Deputy Manager, Group Sales and Tourism. Charles Croce assumed Horrocks's position in 2000.
As reported in the 2006 Annual Report, the Museum expanded the duties and staff of its Marketing and Public Relations Department. The Department Director Charles Croce oversaw a staff of 16 who service four distinct operations; namely, media relations, marketing communications, special events and web development. These four offices were managed, respectively, by Norman Keyes, Director of Media Relations, Marcia L. Birbilis, Marketing Communications Manager, Camille Focarino, Director of Special Events and Bill Ristine, Webmaster.

Cunningham, Charles Crehore, 1910-1979. Curatorial Office Records of Charles Cunningham, 1973-1977.
Title:
Curatorial Office Records of Charles Cunningham, 1973-1977.
Born in 1910 in Mamaroneck, NY, Charles C. Cunningham attended Harvard and became a curator at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1935. From 1941 to 1966 he was the director of Hartford's Wadsworth Atheneum. He went on to become director of the Art Institute of Chicago until he retired from this position in 1972. George Heard Hamilton, then director of the Clark, invited Cunningham to become chief curator. Cunningham was responsible for two major exhibits at the Clark, The Elegant Academics in 1974 and Jongkind and the Pre-Impressionists: The Painters of the Ecole Saint-Simeon in 1976. He also initiated the Conservation Laboratory, which opened in 1977. Cunningham retired from the Clark that year and died in 1979. The Curatorial Office Records of Charles C. Cunningham primarily contain correspondence about potential museum acquisitions and discussions of loans with staff at other museums. Due to his long and respected career, Cunningham had many acquaintances and close friends among curators and directors at other art institutions, as well as among art historians and dealers. The correspondence in these records includes numerous exchanges about intellectual and business concerns in the art world. The high esteem and affection his peers felt for him is evidenced in letters that blur the line between professional and personal. Other materials in this series include: class lists and grades, assignments, and correspondence with students from several courses taught by Cunningham; CAI memoranda; and financial records about costs of exhibits and loans.

Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1956-1961, n.d.
In 1956, the University of Georgia approached Carl Zigrosser to participate in a Carnegie Corporation grant to "survey, collect and distributematerials for the study of art in the United States." The University was asking historians to act as specialist in an arts discipline, write an essay covering their area and submit a list of the 250 most important historic and aesthetic images. Zigrosser was asked to be the consultant for 19th century graphic arts (to include drawings). The goal was the creation of large slide sets featuring the most important examples of American art. Early correspondence was with Martha Davidson and Lamar Dodd. Later letters are also from William Pierson and Lloyd Goodrich. The correspondence covers the intricacies of Zigrosser's approach as an art historian, and the mundanities of expense accounts. Copies of bills and receipts, and carbons of letters and preliminary lists reflect the locations and collections Zigrosser went to to generate his final selection. Private collectors approached by Zigrosser include: Harry T. Peters,Harold H. Kynett, Gilbert McClintock, Irving Olds, and Henry Shattuck. Dealers included Kennedy Galleries and The Old Print Shop. Institutions that contributed images were the New York Historical Society, American Antiquarian Society, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Zigrosser's list of 19th century graphics and his essay were warmly received and used as models within the project. In 1958, with his section wrapped-up, Zigrosser was enlisted to take over the 20th century garphics as well, that project having become stalled. Working from an existing list, Zigrosser resurrected the failing project and submitted his essay for that discipline. The end of the project is represented by newspaper clippings and flyers describing the project, and correspondence concerning the publication of the essays.

Title:
Fiske Kimball papers, 1874-1957, n.d.
The Fiske Kimball papers include correspondence, architectural drawings, manuscripts, typescripts, ephemera, photographs, and research material documenting the myriad interests and tireless professional pursuits of architect, scholar and museum director Fiske Kimball. Much of the material pertains to Kimball's academic interest in the architectural work of Thomas Jefferson, the history of domestic architecture in the United States, and the development of the Rococo style in France, topics about which he wrote, lectured, and consulted frequently. In addition, Kimball's curatorial and architectural involvement with several important historic restoration projects is well documented, including his work at Monticello and Colonial Williamsburg, as is his involvement with the nascent historic preservation movement in the United States. Many of Kimball's own academic and residential architectural projects also are documented, as is his long professional relationship with the American Institute of Architects. The collection also includes some material related to Kimball's teaching positions at University of Virginia and New York University among other universities, and a small amount of material pertaining to his thirty-year tenure as director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Kimball's marriage and relationship with Marie Goebel, with whom he shared a passion for the life and work of Thomas Jefferson, is also documented.

Title:
The Stella Kramrisch papers 1921-1998
As a teacher, lecturer, curator and prolific writer, Dr. Stella Kramrisch (1898-1993) devoted nearly 70 years to the study and appreciation of Indian art. She served as the curator of Indian art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from 1954 until her death in 1993. The Stella Kramrisch papers document her activities, correspondence and publications as a collector and historian of Indian art. The records in this collection date from 1921 to 1998 and contain information about the art objects in Stella Kramrisch’s personal collection (which were later donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art), and her publications and research. There is also a large collection of photographs of Indian architecture, paintings and sculpture. The majority of the collection is printed material related to Kramrisch’s research and scholarship; the breadth of the materials in this collection attests to her seminal influence on and ground-breaking contributions to Indian art scholarship.

Evan H. Turner records, 1964-1978
Title:
Evan H. Turner records 1964-1978
Evan H. Turner (born 1927), an art historian and scholar, was the Director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) from 1964 to 1978, leading the Museum through a period of significant growth and transformation. He created new art departments for American and 20th Century Art, and the innovative Department of Urban Outreach (DUO) to promote art across the City of Philadelphia. These progressive activities were matched by a groundbreaking exhibition in 1973, the Marcel Duchamp retrospective, which drew upon significant scholarship and assembled virtually the entire oeuvre of one of the most important artists represented in the Museum. In 1975, Turner led the Museum in a major construction project to install a new climate control system in the building, and in 1976, he helped plan the United States’ Bicentennial and the PMA’s Centennial celebrations. Turner was an active member of a number of professional organizations, as well as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. The Evan H. Turner records document Turner’s tenure as Director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) from 1934 to 1978 (bulk: 1964-1978). A mix of correspondence, inter-office memoranda, reports, minutes and other records provide ample evidence of Turner’s leading position in the Museum’s growth and transformation during that time, as well as exhibition and event planning, and the daily operations of the Museum. The collection also documents Turner’s work with professional organizations, his efforts to help the City plan the 1976 Bicentennial celebrations, and his professorship at the University of Pennsylvania.

FOCUS archives, 1972-1975
Title:
FOCUS archives 1972-1975
"FOCUS: Philadelphia Focuses on Women in the Visual Arts" was a city-wide arts program that occurred in April and May of 1974 and featured mostly East Coast artists and scholars. Initiated by Philadelphia painter Diane Burko, the two month program included art exhibitions, juried shows, panels, lectures, workshops, demonstrations and film viewings, all organized by Philadelphia-area women who were involved with the arts. The central event of the FOCUS program was “Women’s Work: American Art, 1974,” a contemporary art exhibit financed by and held in the Museum of the Philadelphia Civic Center. Other FOCUS events focused on topics such as race, history, and the realities of being a female artist. The records in the FOCUS collection date from 1972 to 1975 and include meeting minutes from various FOCUS committees, outreach and advertising documents, correspondence, and records of the grant application process. Despite the relatively brief existence of the initiative, the deliberate documentation of FOCUS programs by internal committees makes this collection an especially comprehensive representation of the group’s activities.

Pew Charitable Trusts. Office of the Executive Director. Records of Rebecca W. Rimel, 1988-
Title:
Records of Rebecca W. Rimel, 1988-
Subseries B. Sub-Subseries i. contains Rebecca W. Rimel's general correspondence as executive director (1988-1993) of The Pew Charitable Trusts. (Her records as president and CEO form Subseries C., Series V of Accession 2020: The Records of The Pew Charitable Trusts.) It is arranged alphabetically by correspondent for each year. (Note: Because of this arrangement, correspondence from 1988 includes some letters written while Rimel was vice president responsible for health sciences funding.) A portion of this Sub-Subseries includes grant acknowledgments and check requests. The majority, however, contains correspondence with a variety of individuals and grant-seeking institutions, other charitable foundations, local and national political figures and personal and professional acquaintances. Topics include requests for funds; the progress of current grants and Trust-initiated programs; media coverage of the trusts; grants, programs and staffing changes at other foundations; invitations to events; Rimel's service on external boards of trustees; her continuing interest in research on head injury; and the effect of national and local political decisions on foundations. Some of Rimel's correspondence reflect her efforts to guide the trusts through the organizational changes of the late 1980s, including letters from longtime grantees concerned that the reorganization might fundamentally alter the trusts' traditional grantmaking focus. Subseries B. Sub-Subseries ii. contains administrative records held by Rimel: including program plans, project files and external board membership. (Note: This Sub-Subseries includes some records held by Rimel when she served as program director and president and CEO of The Pew Charitable Trusts.).

Title:
Henry P. McIlhenny papers, 1817-1988, n.d. ; bulk: 1934-1986.
The Henry P. McIlhenny Papers document the privileged and urbane lifestyle of the man whose tastes and talents earned him a reputation as one of America's top 10 art collectors, particularly of 19th century French and English paintings and drawings, as well as a world traveler, host extraordinaire, philanthropist and generous friend. Although Henry McIlhenny is the primary creator, this collection encompasses the art collections initiated by his parents, John D. and Frances P. McIlhenny, which passed, along with the family trust fund, on to McIlhenny and his sister, Bernice ("Bonnie") Wintersteen. Much of the material deals with McIlhenny's activities from the mid-1930s to his final years, with particularly extensive documentation of his art collection, which also includes decorative arts and sculpture, and his homes, which encompasses his penchant for interior design and his passion for horticulture. Also well documented are his many years of service to and support of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Academy of Music, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. The records of McIlhenny's finances are extensive as well. Invoices and receipts are included throughout the collection and document extraordinary to everyday purchases, offering a snapshot study of class economics and consumerism. While correspondence and invoices make up the bulk of material, the collection also includes many photographs, clippings, monthly statements and reports, and to a lesser extent, account books, appraisals, catalogs, ephemera, legal documents, drawings and fabric swatches.

Title:
Community Programs and Urban Outreach records Bulk, 1970-1980 1951-1984
The Department of Urban Outreach (DUO) of the Philadelphia Museum of Art was established in 1970 as an effort to reach new audiences by bringing art and art programs directly into Philadelphia’s inner city neighborhoods. In 1977, it became the Department of Community Programs, hereafter referred to as the Department. This collection documents the activities of the Department. The records date from 1951 to 1984, the bulk dating from 1970 to 1980, and include correspondence, exhibit planning documentation, photographs and scrapbooks, information concerning artists involved in various projects, and some general research files concerning related events and initiatives in the art community. While the collection does not provide comprehensive documentation of all aspects of the Department, it does include a wide variety of resources that demonstrate the Department’s intentions of appealing to culturally, economically and ethnically diverse communities. Of particular interest are the numerous records documenting exhibits and outreach programs, such as the Environmental Art and “Wall Art” programs.

Beede, Carl Greenleaf. Papers, 1927-1949.
Title:
Papers, 1927-1949.
This collection primarily contains the research notes, photographs, and typed manuscripts of Carl Greenleaf Beede from 1927-1949. Most items relate to a series of articles on early American furniture that Beede wrote for the Christian Science Monitor during the 1920s and 1930s. These include not only numerous photos, but also biographical notes, bibliographies, time-lines, history charts, and correspondence with other scholars and collectors. Some articles and pamphlets by other scholars also form part of the collection. An outline and notes for a book on American furniture is also included. The book was scheduled to contain a chapter on the history of American furniture collecting, collectors, and collections, but it was apparently never published. Beede gathered some of his information by writing to museums and asking them about their collection development policies on early American furniture. He received a number of replies which are also found in the collection.

Kimball, Fiske, 1888-1955. Fiske Kimball records, 1908-1955.
Title:
Fiske Kimball records, 1908-1955.
From 1925 to 1955, Fiske Kimball served as director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, steering the institution from what he described as "a minor provincial position to become one of the leading museums of America." The Fiske Kimball Records document Kimball's efforts in achieving this transformation in collaboration with the Museum's officers, staff, and the Fairmount Park Commission, and with the assistance of private benefactors and City funding. Comprised primarily of correspondence, these records also include photographs, mostly of objects, rooms and architectural elements offered for purchase; ephemera; newspaper clippings; notes; floor plans; installation drawings; legal documents; reports; minutes; press releases; and publications. Kimball's correspondents include preeminent leaders of art museums, universities, auction houses and professional affiliations, as well as government representatives, private collectors, scholars, and artists. Kimball's often successful courting of potential donors of objects and contributors of funds is well represented, as well as his efforts to secure labor supplied by the Works Progress Administration. In addition to the refinement and expansion of the Museum's holdings, the development of various departments and offices is also documented, and to a lesser extent other related facilities.

Curatorial Office Records of the Prints and Drawings Department, 1952-1996 (bulk 1958-1994)
This series contains records of the Prints and Drawings Collection from 1952-1996. These records were primarily created by William Collins, curator from 1958-1960; William Ittman, curator from 1967-1971; and Rafael Fernandez, curator from 1975-1994. In the periods between the tenures of these curators the museum director and/or curators and staff from other departments handled prints and drawings business. Consequently, the series also contains files from the former directors Peter Guille, George Heard Hamilton, and David Brooke, and from curatorial assistants including Tom Fels and Kristen Collins. There is also a group of files from Egbert Haverkamp Begemann, professor of art history at Yale University, related to his 1964 publication of Drawings from the Clark Art Institute. In general the files consist of correspondence about prints and drawings acquisitions, loans, and reproductions, research for catalogues and exhibits, inventories of the collection, bills, student papers, and departmental reports.

Conservation and technical research collection, 1932-1969, n.d.
The collection documents the establishment and early operations of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's conservation laboratory and the use of photographic technology in conservation and curatorial work. While the majority of the material pertains to the activities of Henri Marceau, Curator of Painting and Sculpture, and of the John G. Johnson Collection, and of David Rosen, who served as an adviser to the Museum's conservation and technical research projects, the collection also includes some records of Theodor Siegl, who was hired as the Museum's first full-time conservator in 1955. In addition to correspondence, technical brochures, and educational materials, the collection includes extensive files of prints, negatives, and lantern slides documenting works of art in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and John G. Johnson collections, as well as works sent to the Museum for restoration and/or exhibition purposes.
