The photographs in the City Parks Association collection reflect the interest of the association in parks and open areas within the city of Philadelphia, surrounding communities, and other U.S. and foreign cities. Included are views of bridges, buildings, railroads, squares, streets, subways, trolleys, and cemeteries. Many of the photographs are attributed to photographers Phillip B. Wallace and Stanley Elmore Steady with a few taken by James Mitchell Elliot. Most of the photographs are undated and unidentified as to location.

The City Parks Association was originally chartered on May 23, 1889, by the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia to create and maintain open spaces as park areas for citizens of Philadelphia. The Association worked together with city govenment in recommending large and small parks for the city.
