The Fiske Kimball papers include correspondence, architectural drawings, manuscripts, typescripts, ephemera, photographs, and research material documenting the myriad interests and tireless professional pursuits of architect, scholar and museum director Fiske Kimball. Much of the material pertains to Kimball's academic interest in the architectural work of Thomas Jefferson, the history of domestic architecture in the United States, and the development of the Rococo style in France, topics about which he wrote, lectured, and consulted frequently. In addition, Kimball's curatorial and architectural involvement with several important historic restoration projects is well documented, including his work at Monticello and Colonial Williamsburg, as is his involvement with the nascent historic preservation movement in the United States. Many of Kimball's own academic and residential architectural projects also are documented, as is his long professional relationship with the American Institute of Architects. The collection also includes some material related to Kimball's teaching positions at University of Virginia and New York University among other universities, and a small amount of material pertaining to his thirty-year tenure as director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Kimball's marriage and relationship with Marie Goebel, with whom he shared a passion for the life and work of Thomas Jefferson, is also documented.
