Geoffrey T. Hellman was born in New York City in 1907, the son of the writer George Hellman. While a student at Yale he was a contributor to the Yale News, Yale Record and the Yale Literary Magazine. Upon graduating in 1928, he went to write for the New York Herald Tribunes Sunday book supplement thanks to a recommendation by Thorton Wilder.
