The Pennsylvania Hospital was established in 1751. The original section of its building was designed by Samuel Rhoads; construction began in 1755.
The Pennsylvania Hospital was founded in 1751 by Dr. Thomas Bond and Benjamin Franklin. Chartered by the Colonial Government, the Pennsylvania Hospital has the distinction of being the first hospital in America to care for the sick poor. The original building on Eighth and Pine Streets, completed in 1755, was expanded over the years, as demand for a larger facility grew. Today the Hospital maintains the original building, as well as many others, as part of its campus.

Coxe, John Redman, 1773-1864. Papers, 1747-1800.
Title:
Papers, 1747-1800.
Coxe's diploma, handwritten in Latin, was awarded by the Pennsylvania Academy (i.e. University of Pennsylvania); it granted him a degree in Medical Arts, May 19, 1794. The diploma is signed by nine professors, including William Shippen, Benjamin Rush, Samuel P. Griffitts, Caspar Wistar, John Ewing, J. Andrews, and Jac. Davidson. (The other two names are difficult to read.) A blue silk ribbon is attached to the diploma. The collection includes items relating to the medical education of John Redman Coxe and his grandfather John Redman. Items relating to Coxe include a diploma, certificates of membership in the Grand Lodge of Scotland (dated 1795) and in the American Philosophical Society (1799, signed by the society's president Thomas Jefferson); a passport issued to Coxe in France in 1796 (signed by James Monroe as minister plenipotentiary); and certificates of attendance at medical classes taken in London in 1791. As well, the collection contains several certificates relating to the medical studies of John Redman, grandfather of John Redman Coxe. The certificates attest to Redman's studies in Edinburgh, Leyden, and Guy's Hospital in London, 1747-1749. Two of the certificates are in Latin. Also, there is a printed document about a contribution made by Redman to the Pennsylvania Hospital in 1800.

Title:
Records, 1908-1998.
The record group of 1908-1998 reflects the history of the school, its functions and programs, as well as its relationship with the University and other organizations. It contains such valuable records as correspondence of early years, annual report from 1965 to 1986, minutes of various committees of the School. Included in the administration file are reports to NLN in related to accreditation, contracts with over a dozen of hospitals for nursing practice of the students, dean's file, faculty manuals, plans, policies, and procedures. The course outline series is a major component of the collection. Material for each curriculum consists of a syllabus, bibliographical listings, and the class schedule. All the courses are arranged numerically by the course number. The collection also includes a large quantity of material related to all kinds of grant projects. For the simplicity of organization, all documents related to the University and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania have been grouped as sub-series in the series of Other Organizations. The record group of 1954-1998 reflects the development of the School, its functions and programs in more recent years. It consists of Board and committee records, administrative files, course syllabus files, personnel file, and alumni activities files. The bulk of the record group of 1966-1996 documents the activity of the School during the Claire M. Fagin's administration (1977-1991). It includes a series of the Administrative files, a series of the Teaching and Research Programs, Individual Faculty files, Business/Financial Files, and two small series--a Book/Reference Collection and the Audio-video Tapes.

Lantern slides of Philadelphia buildings, furniture, and American silver and pewter, ca.1915-ca.1947.
Title:
Lantern slides of Philadelphia buildings, furniture, and American silver and pewter, ca.1915-ca.1947.
Lantern slides, most in black and white, but over 90 in color, most of which show pieces of American silver and pewter or exterior and interior views and details of 18th century homes located in and around Philadelphia. Also included are slides depicting details of doors and windows of various old homes in Philadelphia, 18th century furniture (particularly pieces made by or attributed to William Savery), a few advertisements for Philadelphia furniture and mirror makers, and some art (principally prints from English portraits). In addition to Philadelphia area homes, there is a set of slides depicting the Pennsylvania Hospital. It is not known who assembled this collection, but clearly some of the slides were meant to illustrate talks about 18th century homes in and near Philadelphia. Among the homes depicted are Andalusia, Barren Hill, Wyck, Whitby Hall, Mt. Pleasant, Cannonball Farm, Graeme Park, Solitude, Hope Lodge, Upsala, the Powel house, and Woodlands, the Hamilton home. The slides of silver and pewter are in two groups. One group has pieces made by silversmiths in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, including Paul Revere, John coney, Bartholomew LeRoux, Joseph Richardson, Sr., and Philip Syng, Jr. The other group is divided by form: mugs, tankards, porringers, teapots, etc., most of which are identified by maker. Most of the pieces are from the 18th century, with a few from the early 19th century. Although found together, the slides of Philadelphia buildings seem not to be related to the slides of silver and pewter.

Peale-Sellers family collection, 1686-1963
Title:
Peale-Sellers Family Collection, 1686-1963
The collection, divided into seven series, represents the careers and interests of the members of the Peale-Sellers family from the 1670s to 1960s. More than half is correspondence among various members of the families. The Peale family is best known as a family of artists; however, family interests and activities were much more wide-ranging. The best known Peale is Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827, APS 1786), who produced more than one thousand paintings, including hundreds of portraits of leading Americans during the colonial and early national periods. Peale was married three times, to Rachel Brewster (1744-1790), Elizabeth de Peyster (1765-1804), and Hannah More (1755-1821). He had eighteen children, eleven of whom reached adulthood. Three of Charles Willson Peale’s sons became artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), and Rubens Peale (1784-1865). A fourth son, Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885, APS 1833), was a naturalist (who made drawings on the exploring expeditions he accompanied) and pioneer in photography, and another son, Benjamin Franklin Peale (1795-1870), became a naturalist and paleontologist. Peale’s daughter Sophonisba Angusciola was married to Coleman Sellers (1781-1834), an inventor and manufacturer of machinery, including locomotives. Two of their sons, George Escol Sellers (1808-1899) and Coleman Sellers (1827-1907, APS 1872), were inventors and engineers. The latter served as director of the construction of the hydro-electric power development at Niagara Falls. He was married to Cornelia Wells Sellers (1831-1909). One of their grandsons was Charles Coleman Sellers (1903-1980, APS 1979), a librarian and historian and the author of several studies of the Peale family, including a Charles Willson Peale biography.

The records consist of a microfilm of four volumes of letterbooks containing Cope's outbound correspondence from December 1788 to May 1853. The quantity of letters decreases markedly after 1835, as Cope relinquishes most of the details of business to his sons. Cope kept no diary between 1820 and 1843, and the letters are the primary source on his life and career during this period.
