Elmer W. Merritt was a trustee and founding father of the Colorado Museum of Natural History (CMNH).
Merritt was born in New York State on October 31, 1861, attended the University of Ann Arbor and arrived in Denver in 1879. He went into the lumber and mercantile business and eventually became connected with the Continental Oil Co. In 1885 he began a career in real estate and investment securities, forming the firm Merritt and Gromman.
He served as Secretary of the Board of Trustees at CMNH (now the Denver Museum of Nature & Science) from 1897-1902. The museum was incorporated in 1900, during his watch. In addition to his founding work at the museum, Merritt was also a member of the Depot Commission when Denver's Union Station was built and served as a Colorado State Senator.
Merritt died in 1917.
Dr. Persifor M. Cooke was the longest serving member of the Denver Museum of Natural History's Board of Trustees. He served continuously from 1905 to 1954, a total of 49 years.
Cooke was born December 25, 1860 in Adams County, near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and in 1886 graduated from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. After completing medical school he served short stints as a resident physician and surgeon in Brooklyn and as health physician in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In 1888 he moved to Denver and practiced medicine until 1899, when he joined Denver National Bank. He held several important positions with the bank and retired in 1929.
In 1892 Cooke married Annie Kirtley Shields of Denver. They had one son, but he was killed in World War I when a German submarine torpedoed the US Navy patrol boat he served on. Annie died in 1932 and Cooke married Helen Archbold in 1935. She died in 1948.
At the time of his death in 1954 at age 93, Cooke was still an active Trustee of the Museum, now the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Over the years he regularly attended Board meetings and was very active in Museum business. He was Board Secretary from 1902 to 1931, Secretary-Treasurer from 1936 to 1945, and again Secretary in 1946 and 1947. He served as Historian for the Board of Trustees until his death. In addition, Cooke was a frequent visitor to the Museum. He closely followed its progress and befriended employees. He considered it "the finest Museum in the country" and told the Board and Director that it was his chief interest during the last decade of his life. Accordingly, he generously remembered the Museum in his will.

Miller, Frederick W. Department of Biology and Mammals records 1913-1931.
Title:
Department of Biology and Mammals records 1913-1931.
The collection, held in two 5 x 15.5 x 10 inch boxes and one 2.5 x 15.5 x 10-inch box, contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, catalogs, publications and other papers from the files of mammalogist Frederick Walter Miller. The materials date from 1916 to 1931. Among other topics, the correspondence, both typewritten and handwritten, discusses Miller's field work for the Colorado Museum of Natural History (now the Denver Museum of Nature & Science). One 1925 letter, from museum director Jesse Figgins (who was also Miller's father-in-law), offers advice on Miller"s current field trip to South America:-"Avoid at all times going without hats", and expresses delight at the process of collecting exotic species: "There isnâ‚‚t much enthusiasm aroused in skinning prairie dogs and English sparrows but there is a big kick in flamingos and jaguars." There are also several letters to and from Miller from government agencies, including the U.S. Biological Survey and the U.S. Forest Service. In addition, the collection includes accession lists of mammals, catalogs of mammals by species, inventories of equipment and manuscripts.

Rogers, Albert C., 1888-1959. Albert C. Rogers papers 1876-1979.
Title:
Albert C. Rogers papers 1876-1979.
The first part of the collection, 46 folders contained in one 5 x 15.5 x 10-inch box and one 2.5 x 15.5 x 10-inch box, holds the papers of Albert C. Rogers, who was a preparator in and later curator of the Colorado Museum of Natural History's Mammals division. (The CMNH is now the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.) The papers date from 1917 to 1958. Among the papers are official "Large Mammal Records" for various species, showing a diagram, measurements, sex and other characteristics for collected specimens. There also are copious amounts of correspondence, typewritten and handwritten, discussing the Mammal Division's field work, including a 1918 letter from Museum director Jesse Figgins designating Rogers the Museum's representative for work in Alaska and the Yukon. A folder from 1949 contains a group of handwritten letters from sixth graders at Denver's Beach Court School, thanking Rogers for a recent tour. The files also contain newspaper clippings, plant and animal lists, equipment lists, exhibit planning notes and procedures files for, among other things, making plaster casts. Rogers also served as building superintendent at the Museum. The files contain letters related to that work (one discusses repairs to the ladies' toilet), along with diagrams (one shows the location of fire extinguishers in the Museum) and floor plans. The second part of the collection, seven folders of Zoology Dept. records dating from 1876 to 1979, contains a mammal accession ledger, historical mammal acquisition records, historical mammal catalog and specimen ledger, documents of historical collections transactions and plans from the 1970s for a butterfly exhibit.

Denver Museum of Natural History. Architectural plans and drawings of the Denver Museum of Natural History 1908-present.
Title:
Architectural plans and drawings of the Denver Museum of Natural History 1908-present.
These plans and drawings reflect the history of the Denver Museum of Natural History. The Museum opened to the public in 1908 in a classical revival building that housed glass cases filled with gems, minerals, fossils, taxidermied birds and mammals, and artwork. The first structure of the Museum was the East Wing, finished in 1903, for which no plans or drawings seem to exist, and which only contained a workshop, a heating plant, and collection storage areas. The North Wing addition, also called the Standley Memorial Wing because Mrs. Joseph M. Standley contributed funding in memory of her husband, was added in 1918. The William H. James Memorial Wing, also called the South Wing, was dedicated in 1928. Phipps Auditorium was started in 1938 and completed in 1940. In 1948, the name of the Museum was changed from the Colorado Museum of Natural History to the Denver Museum of Natural History. The new west building was opened in 1953. Southwest and Northwest Wings were added in 1968. An IMAX theater was installed in Phipps Auditorium in 1983. The Northeast and Southeast Wings, also called the Service Building Addition, were completed in 1987; this project included a boiler building, a new north entrance, and atria connecting and enclosing the older building spaces.

This collection of documents is contained in nine boxes and one series of bound volumes and binders. One part dates from between 1850 and 1920 and includes "Colorado Notes from an Ornithologist" by Frederick C. Lincoln. It also includes personal communication from 1921 to 1922 between Frank M. Taylor, then President of the Board of Trustees of the Colorado Museum of Natural History (now the Denver Museum of Nature & Science), and Lincoln, when Lincoln was treasurer of the Biological Society of Washington, D.C. The collection also includes personal correspondence between Lincoln and well-known ornithologists, naturalists and private individuals regarding requests for specimens for the museum. In addition, there is a series of Lincoln's field notes relating to ornithology, taxidermy, extinction, and general specimen data. There is also a collection of photos by Lincoln. Lincoln's communications reflect his efforts to build an avian collection for the museum.

Campion, John F. 1848-1916. John F. Campion papers 1894-1915.
Title:
John F. Campion papers 1894-1915.
The John F. Campion collection consists of images, correspondence and other documents, most of it relating to the work done on behalf of the Colorado Museum of Natural History (now the Denver Museum of Nature & Science) by Campion, first president of the Museum's board of trustees and donor of a large gold collection. The first part of the collection, held in 28 file folders in a 2.5 x 15.5 x 10 inch box, contains files and correspondence of Campion. Many letters are original, though some have been reproduced and included as photocopies. The dates of this portion range from 1894 (a set of letters relating to specimen showcases that Campionâ‚‚s mining firm was seeking to buy) to 1908 (financial correspondence, timelines and letters discussing the ongoing work of the Museum's building committee). There is also an 1897 exchange of letters between Campion and Edwin Carter, whose donation of mounted Colorado bird and mammal specimens was the founding collection of the new Museum, incorporated in 1900. Other letters and memos from the early 1900s document the progress and stumbling blocks encountered by Museum trustees as the new building was designed and constructed. Later documents, dating from the Museum's second decade, deal with exhibit installations. A Jan. 3, 1911, letter to Campion from V.H. Borcherdt, curator, describes "inaccuracies" in some displays of mammals species, including bison "in full winter pellage" set amid a mid-summer context and a group of wild turkey whose ranks included a domestic male specimen. The later files also included budget requests and financial reports. The Campion collection's second part, contained in eight file folders in a 2.5 x 15 x 10-inch box, dates from 1900-1917. The group of miscellaneous documents includes agreements relating to Campion's mining business and letters discussing to his other charitable endeavors, including a donation to the University of Colorado. There also is a 1901 letter from Charles W. Harris, Commissioner to the Colorado Department of Game and Fish, to Campion revoking the latter's hunting permit, and a book of humorous sketches, poetry and cartoons commemorating a train trip taken by Campion, his wife and two other couples. The third and final part of the Campion collection consists of 19 images. Many of them relate to the Campion gold collection and include prints and negatives of the gold on exhibit and negatives showing the exhibit safe. Among the images are also portraits of Campion and his wife, Nellie, a print depicting a plaque in memory of Campion, and a copy slide of an oil painting of Campion.

Title:
Jesse D. Figgins papers 1904-1969.
The Jesse D. Figgins Collection presents archival evidence of the evolution of a major natural history museum from its beginnings. Jesse D. Figgins was the first paid professional Director of the Colorado Museum of Natural History, later the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, from 1910 until 1935. This large collection contains correspondence and telegrams between Figgins and Museum Trustees, donors, other museums, and people involved in such projects as excavation of the Folsom Site in New Mexico. Figgins's correspondence includes letters to collectors of artifacts, staff directives, memos regarding exhibits, and letters concerning field work, such as the excavation of diplodocus bones and anthropological sites. The collection also contains museum incorporation documents, as well as other documents pertaining to running the evolving museum. Much of the early correspondence is regarding natural history specimens, but also pertains to the acquisition of early Egyptian material and North American anthropological material, such as stone points and pottery. Also found in the collection are letters to and from Alfred M. Bailey regarding Bailey's extensive field work in Alaska and much correspondence with Barnum Brown at the American Museum of Natural History regarding collections and field work.Figgins's letters were on paper, at first handwritten in ink and pencil and later typewritten with carbon copies, and fill twenty three 5 x 15.5 x 10-inch boxes, six 2.5 x 15.5 x 10-inch boxes and sixty folders. The collection also contains a pencil on paper drawing executed by Figgins and labeled "Homo Novus Mundus." Digital images of correspondence about the Folsom site and the Folsom point discovery can be found at http://www.cdpheritage.org.

Colorado Museum of Natural History, Secretary of the Board of Trustees records 1897-1947.
This collection, contained in one 2.5 x 15.5 x 10-inch box, contains 22 file folders housing correspondence and other documents relating to work done for the museum by Elmer W. Merritt and Persifor M. Cooke. Merritt and Cooke were the first two Secretaries of the Board of Trustees of the Colorado Museum of Natural History, now the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Merritt served in the office from 1897 to 1902. Cooke took over from 1902 to 1931. He later served as Secretary-Treasurer from 1936 to 1945, and again as Secretary in 1946 and 1947. Many of the papers in the collection, dating from 1897 to 1947, document the events of the Museum's earliest days. Among the documents are a typewritten letter to Merritt dated September 2, 1897, from John H. Winser, Secretary and Assistant Treasurer at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Winser offered to share "any information as to our system of casing" and called it "very gratifying to learn that you have in process the creation of a natural history Museum in Denver."â‚„ The collection also contains a 1901 telegram from Merritt to John F. Campion regarding the donation of the Carter collection, along with other letters discussing the same collection, and various pieces of correspondence discussing the erection of the museum building in Denver's City Park and purchases relating to its roof, turnstiles, and other furnishings and finishing elements.

Title:
Frank Howland papers, 1918-1935.
The records of Frank Howland consist of 0.9 cubic feet of correspondence and specimen lists dating from 1918 to 1935. Howland's collection responsibilities included geology, mineralogy, oology, and conchology. His correspondence also reflects some involvement in archaeology and paleontology. In addition, there are a number of letters to and from individuals wanting to sell or know the value of coins and, in one case, stamps. Although the Museum did not purchase these items, Howland demonstrated some knowledge in this area, perhaps being a private collector. Howland conducted exchanges of specimens and did some exhibit work as part of his curatorial duties. Topics included in his records are: minerals, gems, meteorites, Yuma and Folsom artifacts, birds' eggs and nests, publications for the library, fossils, shells, coins and stamps. There are also letters about the death of geologist Richard Charles Hills.
