Elmer W. Merritt was a trustee and founding father of the Colorado Museum of Natural History (CMNH). Merritt was born in New York State on October 31, 1861, attended the University of Ann Arbor and arrived in Denver in 1879. He went into the lumber and mercantile business and eventually became connected with the Continental Oil Co. Ornithologist Frederick C. Lincoln was born in 1892 in Denver. He played a critical role in the study of the decline of the waterfowl population in the 1930s due to the extended drought. A formula, now referred to as the Lincoln Index and used by ornithologists to forecast waterfowl populations, gives credit to his name.
