Elmer W. Merritt was a trustee and founding father of the Colorado Museum of Natural History (CMNH). Merritt was born in New York State on October 31, 1861, attended the University of Ann Arbor and arrived in Denver in 1879. Frederick Walter Miller, naturalist, served the Colorado Museum of Natural History (CMNH) as a mammalogist for nineteen years before becoming the first director of the Dallas Museum of Natural History in 1936. While at the CMNH (now the Denver Museum of Nature & Science), Miller in 1925-1926 and in 1928 was in charge of expeditions to South America.
