Lee was a veteran British Army officer who settled in America in 1773 and was appointed a major general in the Continental Army at the outbreak of the Revolution. In 1778, he was appointed to lead the attack at the Battle of Monmouth, but instead retreated without warning, apparently ignored orders from George Washington, and afterward demanded an apology from him. Lee was suspended and later dismissed from the Army.

Lee congratulates Gates on "the honour you have so justly acquired," wishing "may you be personally happy, for I despair ... of your being politically so." Lee bitterly denounces "the present tyrannical anarchy," saying he would "rather marry the Devil's Daughter ... than remain a single instant in this accursed Pandemonium."

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

John Dickinson papers, Bulk, 1753-1808, 1676-1885
Title:
John Dickinson papers Bulk, 1753-1808 1676-1885
John Dickinson (1732-1808), a Philadelphia lawyer and politician, was a major figure in colonial Delaware and Pennsylvania governments and during the early national period. He was an active presence and prolific writer during the American Revolution and early Republic from the passage of the Sugar Act (1764) until the Jefferson presidency (1801 to 1809). He also served in the military as colonel, private, and brigadier general. He married Mary Norris in 1770. John Dickinson died in Delaware in 1808. The John Dickinson papers contains incoming and outgoing correspondence; drafts and original manuscript documents from the revolutionary and early national government, Revolutionary War, Delaware and Pennsylvania government; land papers; legal papers; bills and receipts; collected essays, notes and commonplace books; and estate material. The papers provide a clear picture of the way in which colonists envisioned their new country and how these new Americans worked, compromised and adapted in order to achieve their visions. Mary Norris Dickinson is documented in two volumes: one of letters and one of poems.

Hooker, Roger, 1751-1830. Orderly books, 1775.
Title:
Orderly books, 1775.
Manuscripts, in multiple hands, of a collection of over a hundred military orders issued during the American Revolutionary War, primarily during the year 1775. The volumes include orders by General George Washington, Major General Joseph Spencer, General Artemas Ward, and John Trumbull. The majority of the orders address administrative issues, such as establishing procedures for granting furlough; assigning colored ribbons to distinguish military ranks; and instituting twice-weekly inspections of soldiers' arms. Other orders concern military discipline; one order forbids soldiers to bathe in the Bridge at Cambridge, MA, when pedestrians, especially ladies, are present; another from August 4, 1775 declares that any soldier who fires guns in and about the camp when no enemy is in sight will be considered as a common enemy and authorizes guards to fire on them as such. Many orders also contain summaries of court-martials and their verdicts and punishments, including 30 lashes for a soldier who had abused the camp doctor; riding the "wooden horse" for 30 minutes for a soldier who was insolent towards his captain; and being put into a horse cart with a rope around his neck and drummed out of the army for a soldier who had behaved disrespectfully toward the Continental Association by drinking to General Thomas Gage's health. Many orders in the first volume are also copied in the second volume. The first volume also includes daily personnel charts of men fit for service, as well as several dozen personal journal entries on the events of the day. These entries record the troops' marches, the weather, reports of battles, as well as descriptions of Hooker's own troops' military engagements. On June 17, 1775, he records the activities of the army at Bunker's Hill. On July 5, 1775, he records a visit by Generals Washington and Lee; elsewhere, he notes skirmishes around Boston Harbor; casualties; and deserters. All but the last two entries in the first volume are from 1775; the last two are dated 1834, and consist of a copy of a letter to the editor by Thomas Cowles on the successful crops in American south, and a copy of a letter from John Jay Jr., Thomas Porter, and Thomas Cowles of the Antimasonic Party in defense of the Constitution.

Maass, Richard, 1919-1998,. The Richard Maass collection of Westchester and New York State, 1645-1910 (bulk 1770-1783).
Title:
The Richard Maass collection of Westchester and New York State, 1645-1910 (bulk 1770-1783).
Collection consists of over three hundred autograph letters, documents, and newspapers which chronicle the early history of New York State from its colonization by the Dutch to the mid-nineteenth century. The collection is, however, particularly rich in materials relating to the Revolutionary War and can provide researchers with multiple perspectives on significant events and individual military campaigns. For example, the Battle of White Plains is amply documented in the collection through correspondence from participants and observers, as well as in contemporary newspaper accounts. The arrangement of the collection, for the most part, has followed Maass's own organization. With a few exceptions, each item has been listed and described individually in the finding aid. Any additional information that has been provided by Maass regarding a specific document has been retained and placed in a folder which has been filed immediately behind the folder containing the document to which it relates. Almost every folder for each item in the collection contained a one to two page description of the document, as well as other ancillary materials such as transcriptions and/or translations of documents by Maass. These folders also occasionally contained provenance information. Any additions to the collection are to be processed as separate accretions. In addition to autograph letters and historical documents, the Maass Collection contained a small amount of printed materials. These chiefly consisted of over thirty different early American, British, and French newspapers, dating mainly from the eighteenth century, which have been organized as a separate series (Series V).

ALS, 1776 June 27 : Winchester, to Major General Charles Lee.
A long, detailed report on political conditions in Virginia just before the Declaration of Independence, with the conflict on remaining with the British Empire or fighting for self government. "The Arguments of Pamphleteers and News Paper Scriblers on both sides of the Question have been so absurd, fallacious or at best superficial that very little instruction or pleasure could be derived from reading them."

Title:
Letter to John Page, 1776 October 7.
Wythe fears "evil consequences" will result from the unsuccessful peace conference on Staten Island between Lord Howe and Adams, Franklin and Rutledge. He reports on the course of the war in New York, confirming the defeat and retreat at Kip's Bay, and the counter-attack at Harlem Heights in which Major Andrew Leitch was mortally wounded. Wythe has been informed that the army is not discouraged and wishes to continue fighting. He also promises to forward a seal and notes in a postscript that General Lee has come to Philadelphia on his way to Washington's headquarters in New York. An engraving of Wythe accompanies the letter.
