South Carolina plantation owner, author, politician, and Revolutionary War general. Moultrie was captured in May 1780 and held by the British as a prisoner on parole at Haddrell's Point in Charleston, S.C. He was exchanged in February 1782.

South Carolina Revolutionary War general and politician. William Moultrie was taken prisoner at Charleston, South Carolina when the city fell to the British in May 1780. He was paroled to the barracks at Haddrell's Point, S.C., and in 1782 was sent to Philadelphia where he was exchanged for Gen. John Burgoyne.

William Moultrie (1730-1805), American revolutionary general. As Colonel of the 2nd South Carolina Regiment, he led a raid on an encampment of escaped slaves on Sullivan's island in December 1775, and in June of next year successfully repelled an attack of the British on the fort. On September 16, 1776, Congress named Moultrie Brigadier General, and on Sept. 20, 1776 his unit was taken into the service of the Continental Army. Moultrie took part in Lincoln's operations in the Southern theater, including the defense of Charleston and battle at Stono Ferry. He was taken prisoner during Clinton's Charleston Expedition of 1780.
