Courthion, Pierre. Pierre Courthion papers, 1901-1985, undated
Title:
Pierre Courthion papers, 1901-1985, undated
The collection documents the scholarly, personal and professional pursuits and activities of noted art critic and art historian Pierre Courthion. The bulk of the material relates directly to Courthion's research and writing projects, consisting primarily of unpublished notes and edited typescript drafts of essays, articles and monographs, as well as related visual material and correspondence. Most of the manuscripts are undated. Numerous black-and-white photographs of artists' works, as well as some negatives, slides, and transparencies are found throughout the collection. Printed materials and clippings include press reviews, published articles by Courthion and other art critics and scholars, and other printed ephemera collected by Courthion. Other materials relating to Courthion's professional activities include additional with publishers, artists and their families, business and travel documents, and professional and teaching files. The artist files in Series I form the core of the collection. A range of artists of different nationalities and historical periods from antiquity through the 20th century are represented, although artists connected with late 18th through 20th century art movements predominate. Courthion studied and wrote most prodigiously on the art and artists surrounding Impressionism and on the contemporary 20th century art of his time. Artists figuring prominently in his research and writing files include Camargo, Chéreau, Courbet, Delacroix, Dufy, Ingres, Liotard, Manet, Matisse, Rouault, Rousseau, Schiavi, Seurat, and Soutine. The collection includes a box of printing plates of a Soutine painting, possibly for Courthion's monograph on the artist. Series II and III comprise Courthion's research and writing on national and regional art as well as topical writing. Series II includes subjects such as the the history of European art from antiquity to the Renaissance, the history of Paris, Montmartre and French art, and Dutch and Flemish painting. Series III includes topical research and writing on Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism and 20th century art, and other miscellaneous texts. The final two series comprise a large number of clippings from auction catalogs, journals, and printed ephemera and Courthion's professional, teaching and personal files including travel, lecture and conference notes, and correspondence with publishers, artists and various acquaintances.

Title:
James Thrall Soby papers, 1928-1975 (bulk 1935-1955).
The Soby papers document his nearly 45-year career in 20th-century art scholarship and criticism. Materials date from about 1929 when he became a third partner in Edwin Valentine Mitchell, Inc., booksellers and publishers, to his retirement from the board of trustees at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in 1975. The bulk of the material is from 1935-1955, when Soby was most active, and primarily consists of correspondence from 20th-century artists and photographers, MOMA personnel, curators, critics, friends and family members. Series I. Correspondence (3 lin. ft.): Arranged alphabetically, includes many detailed letters from artists about their work, art theories and personal matters; letters about MOMA business, exhibitions at MOMA and elsewhere; comments about Soby monographs; and letters about the sale of art works to Soby and financial support for artists. The files also contain drawings, small art works and collages, photographs and manuscripts. Series II. Eugene Berman correspondence (1 lin. ft.): Letters from the artist (1932-69, bulk 1935-45) arranged chronologically with a separate substantial file of his drawings. Many of the letters concern his design and decoration of the dining room of Soby's Connecticut house. Other letters are about Berman's work in general, his anger over MOMA's treatment of him and other expatriates involved in the Neo-Romantic movement, his relationship with Julien Levy, and his promotion of other artists' work. Some of his drawings are in Berman's "trompe l'oeil" manner and were sent as letters to Soby. Series III. Peter Blume material (.5 lin. ft.): Correspondence, arranged chronologically (1940-56, bulk 1940-45), from Blume about his paintings, his early life and career, and personal matters. There are a few letters from his wife Ebie. Also included are a pencil drawing and a small landscape painting, and manuscripts about Blume by Soby. Five versions of a Soby ms. on Blume, variously annotated by Blume and Alfred Barr, accompany Soby's notes and correspondence about the production of his monograph on Blume. Series IV. Miscellaneous papers (.5 lin. ft.): Soby notes for a manuscript; review clippings of Soby monographs and exhibitions; his Last Will and Testament, 1942; and assorted Wadley family items such as correspondence, papers, poems, clippings and photographs.

They consist of correspondence, subject files, interviews with artists, writings and notes, miscellaneous records, printed matter, and photographs documenting Mangravite's career as a painter and educator.Series 1: Correspondence includes chronological correspondence documenting Mangravite's career as a painter and educator. Correspondence is with employers, dealers, museums, galleries, collectors, clients, arts and educational organizations, publishers, and other artists. Mangravite's mural commissions are also discussed. Additional events documented include Mangravite's two Guggenheim Fellowships and his trip to Europe in 1955 to interview famous artists.Mangravite's long teaching career is also documented in correspondence with Columbia University, Sarah Lawrence College, Avon School, Fieldston School of the Ethical Culture Schools, Potomac School, Dana Hall School, and the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center. Schlemmer, Oskar, 1888-1943. Journal, 1928-1943.
Title:
Journal, 1928-1943.
Transcripts of entries from Schlemmer's journals for the years 1935-1943, except for a single month (September, 1941); with scattered records from 1925. The transcript includes both whole entries that are not reflected in published selections and full entries where only extracts have been published. The journal is in diary form, with notes on daily activities, including his reading, but serves also as a vehicle for extended reflections on art and artists, art theory and techniques, and Schlemmer's own works. There is detailed discussion of color and form in abstraction, portrait and landscape painting, and the effect of the Nazis on art and artists. Artists mentioned prominently in his discussions and notes include: Emil Nolde, Julius Bissier, Paul Klee, Christian Rohlfs, Georg Muche, Willi Baumeister, Auguste Renoir, Giorgio de Chirico, Georges Rouault, Georges Seurat, Henri Rousseau, Andre Derain, Paul Cezanne, Hans von Marees, Eugene Delacroix, Caspar David Friedrich, and Otto Meyer-Amden ("OM" or "Otto Meyer").

Letters received : Bordeaux, from André Lhote and Ary Leblond, Paris, 1908-1929.
Two sets of letters written to Frizeau by his Paris agents contain art world news and often detailed descriptions of works of art. Lhote and Leblond had opposing aesthetic orientations and their views often clash (on cubism, for instance). The letters convey the almost complete cultural isolation of Bordeaux at the turn of the century.

Title:
John Quinn papers 1901-1926
John Quinn (1870-1924) was a corporation lawyer in New York City who amassed an important private collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture as well as books and manuscripts of contemporary authors. In addition to promoting modern and avant-garde art in all forms, he particularly encouraged the work of members of the Irish Literary Revival, the artists of the Paris School, and English and American writers of his time. In 1923 he sold his manuscript and library holdings to subsidize his art collection. Collection consists mainly of correspondence, with writings, printed matter and photographs that document Quinn's artistic and political interests. Correspondence, 1901-1924, is with artists, art dealers, critics, poets, playwrights, booksellers, publishers, and members of his family. Files of letters and letterbooks contain correspondence relating to his interest in the artistic and literary scene in America and abroad, events in Ireland especially during the Home Rule movement, his purchase of paintings, sculpture, first editions and manuscripts of contemporary literature, and the sale of his library and manuscript collection. Also includes typescripts of literary works, typescript of the catalog of Quinn's art collection, ledgers, sales and exhibition catalogs, periodicals, and photographs of Quinn with individual artists and group portraits.
