Journal, 1928-1943.

Transcripts of entries from Schlemmer's journals for the years 1935-1943, except for a single month (September, 1941); with scattered records from 1925. The transcript includes both whole entries that are not reflected in published selections and full entries where only extracts have been published. The journal is in diary form, with notes on daily activities, including his reading, but serves also as a vehicle for extended reflections on art and artists, art theory and techniques, and Schlemmer's own works. There is detailed discussion of color and form in abstraction, portrait and landscape painting, and the effect of the Nazis on art and artists. Artists mentioned prominently in his discussions and notes include: Emil Nolde, Julius Bissier, Paul Klee, Christian Rohlfs, Georg Muche, Willi Baumeister, Auguste Renoir, Giorgio de Chirico, Georges Rouault, Georges Seurat, Henri Rousseau, Andre Derain, Paul Cezanne, Hans von Marees, Eugene Delacroix, Caspar David Friedrich, and Otto Meyer-Amden ("OM" or "Otto Meyer").
