Medici, House of. Filza IV de signori Medici segnata con la lettera C, 1219-1735.
Title:
Filza IV de signori Medici segnata con la lettera C, 1219-1735.
Collection of legal, notarial (f.i recto-259v), and financial (f.250r-550v) documents pertaining to the affairs of numerous members of the Medici family, as well as their interactions with other Florentine aristocrats (in particular with the Arrigucci, the Antinori, the Guicciardini, and the Altoviti) and with the Church and its local representatives. The majority of the financial documents pertain to the large real estate of the Medici family, both in Florence and in its surrounding areas, such as the Mugello Valley. Numerous farms, pieces of land, and houses, property of Alamanno, Francesco, Vincenzo, Silvestro, Carlo, and other Medici, are described, sometimes in great detail. In certain cases, inventories of the furniture, tools, and utensils belonging to each property are also present; for farms, there are frequent memoranda, notes, and accounts pertaining to production and harvesting, together with credit records of the sale and purchase of produce, instruments, and materials. A brief description and history of the castle of Monte Giovi, outside Florence, is also present. The legal and notarial documents are largely related to the relationship between the Medici family and members of the local clergy. The Medici were heavily involved in many aspects of social and religious life in Florence, including the celebration of the mass; the organization and management of hospitals (referred to as spedali or ospedali, charitable institutions run by nuns or priests and funded both by the Church and by local noblemen, whose mission was to help the pauper); and the election of some of the leaders of the dioceses and other prelates. A large number of documents contain detailed information on these activities, emphasizing the important role held by Andrea, Bernardo, and Alamanno de' Medici in balancing temporal and secular power within the city of Florence. Other miscellaneous documents contained in this collection include accounts concerning a textile business owned by Carlo de' Medici; a letter by the Grand-duke Ferdinando II appointing a Jacinto Mannelli captain of a compagnia, a military division of roughly 200 soldiers.

Harrach, Ferdinand Bonaventura, graf von, 1636-1706. Diplomatic papers of graf von Harrach, [1670s?].
Title:
Diplomatic papers of graf von Harrach, [1670s?].
The papers contain copies of treaties, pacts, negotiation minutes, and other diplomatic agreements; copies of orders and instructions, secret instructions, credentials, memoranda, reports, and correspondence; and copies of newsletters, accounts of current events, and historical background material, all documenting diplomatic, political and military affairs in Europe from the point of view of the Hapsburg emperors between ca. 1600 and 1675. In addition to extensive information concerning the close, if sometimes strained, diplomatic and political connections between the Empire and the Hapsburg rulers of Spain, there is much documentation concerning the diplomatic and military events and confused aftermaths of the Thirty Years' War. Several volumes cover the imperial response to the almost continuous challenges to Hapsburg rule in the Spanish Netherlands and Low Countries; Catalonia and Portugal; the Kingdom of Naples; Hungary; and the Balkans. The multitude of imperial efforts to manage and counter the domination of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean is particularly well traced, including repeated interventions in Poland's elective monarchy; the wars in Hungary and Transylvania; the Venetian response to the Turks; and the arrival of a Turkish ambassador in Vienna. In addition, alliances and conflicts among the smaller German states and principalities, and the Hapsburg role in them, are well represented. Also included are documents tracing the Holy Roman Empire's deteriorating relations with France, especially during the Franco-Spanish War. Background information on France is located in Volume 18 and includes historical reports on relations between France and Turkey, the life of Cardinal Mazarin, copies of correspondence between the French and imperial courts, and papers concerning the conduct of French ambassadors in Vienna. The volumes also hold copies of much correspondence concerning the ultimately unsuccessful imperial negotiations with the member states of the Triple Alliance (England, Holland and Sweden), particularly the English discussions of the baron de Lisola (Volume 5). Reni, Guido, 1575-1642. Letter, 1628, Apr. 8, Bologna.
Title:
Letter, 1628, Apr. 8, Bologna.
Guido Reni answers a note received from an unidentified patron who had complained about the unusual price ("prezzo novo") of his paintings. He explains that the prices depend upon the quality of the work and of the artist. There are, he says, ordinary and extraordinary painters. The ordinary ones are paid, in Bologna, 15 scudi per each "figura grande al naturale." For extraordinary painters, whose works can be offered to "signori grandi," like his own works, the price is different. Such works are appraised by their quality and merit as recognized by knowledgeable persons. Guido Reni hopes that his patron will appreciate his painting as much as those who saw it in Bologna. He mentions that Signor [Giulio] Ros[pili]oso has accepted his price for two paintings, which his patron has perhaps already seen.

Medici, House of. Filza X de signori Medici segnata con la lettera K, 1509-1701.
Title:
Filza X de signori Medici segnata con la lettera K, 1509-1701.
Collection of legal and business documents pertaining to the affairs of numerous members of the Medici family and their relationship, often tumultuous, with other aristocratic families (including the Altoviti; the Risaliti; the Gianfigliazzi; the Guadagni; the Quaratesi; the Samminiati; the Ceccherini; the Capponi; and many others); Florentine merchants (especially those belonging to specific guilds, such as the Arte della seta, also known as Arte di Porta Santa Maria, the Arte del cambio, and the Arte della lana); and local and Italian banks and financial institutions (including the Medici Capponi bank and the Florentine mint, as well as the Monte di pietà). The majority of the items are legal documents, in particular trial proceedings and associated notes, petitions, letters, and complaints, for the many prolonged lawsuits the families brought against either their own relatives or business counterparts. Among these trials, some of the longest and most complex are the one between the heirs of Bernardo de' Medici, Carlo and Alamanno, over the possession of a silver cross with an encased relic, supposedly wood from the Holy Cross (1602); of various members of the Gianfigliazzi family against Vincenzo de' Medici (1658) for multiple unpaid debts, including part of the dowry for his wife, Smeralda Gianfigliazzi; between Andrea de' Medici and Benedetto Quaratesi, (1619) who had allegedly been promised that Andrea would cover the payment of his dowry, as well as offer him a generous share of the profits of the silk workshop he owned (Andrea disputed this agreement once Quaratesi got married); and between the city of Florence and the Monte di pietà against the bankers Neri Capponi and Andrea de' Medici (1630), concerning tax collection and payment, and miscellaneous debts. Sometimes appeals to or involvement of the Grand-dukes also occurred during the trials. The financial documents in the manuscript, which include accounts, credit records, memoranda, receipts, and reports, concern many crucial areas of the Florentine economy, ranging from guilds and their activities (primarily trade and manufacture), to banking (with particular attention to the Medici Capponi bank and its financial operations in Italy and in various European markets), to small businesses, like stores and workshops. In certain cases genealogical information about a specific family is given. Other miscellaneous documents pertain to sale, purchase, and lease of real property in Florence and in the surrounding areas; petitions; and reports concerning farm management and produce harvest.

Encomio de' virtuosi, e lor mecenati : Dedicato al Serenissimo Gran Principe di Toscana D. Ferdinando Secondo, 1618, Florence.
A panegyric on the Medici family as patrons of learning and of the arts, this essay praises their support of Ficino and other humanists, of Michelangelo and Giambologna, among artists, and of scholars in the circle of Cosimo II known to Parigi himself. A program of 16th century decorations for the Piazza della Signoria and extensive 17th century additions to Florence cathedral, both under Medici auspices, are among the works honored with detailed commentary.

Medici, House of. Filza XII de signori Medici segnata con la lettera M, 1340-1666.
Title:
Filza XII de signori Medici segnata con la lettera M, 1340-1666.
Miscellany of approximately 200 (largely original, but with some copies) legal and notarial documents, trial proceedings, accounts, and inventories, concerning the affairs of various members of Florentine families, including the Medici, the Arrigucci, the Altoviti and the Risaliti. Most of the documents contained in the filza concern legal matters of some kind, and can be divided into three broad categories, according to which areas of law they fall into: inheritance law, civil law, and commercial law. Among the last group is a document concerning a large debt owed by the Monte di Pietà and two private investors, Bartolomeo Corsini and Jacopo Ricciardi, to a Jewish ambassador, Juda Lullo, who had been received at the Medicean court. Credit records of transactions between members of the various families engaged in the textile trade are quite frequent. The filza also contains some accounts of the everyday transactions that result from the management of the various farms that composed the Medici estate.
