Anne Beattie was born in 1947 in Washignton, D.C. and attended American University. She received her masters degree from the University of Connecticut. She started her career by writing short stories and published her first novel, Chilly scenes of winter, in 1976. She has taught at Harvard and the University of Connecticut and presently is the Edgar Allan Poe professor of creative writing at the University of Virginia. Beattie summers in York, Maine.

The collection also contans a paper napkin with an autographed limerick from Mary Lee Settle to Ann Beattie, 1981, and photographs of Settle and Beattie together at Monticello, 1996. The collection also contains audiocassettes of Beattie reading two of her short stories from "Perfect recall" "The Women of this world" and "The famous poet Amid Bougainvillea" and one of Beattie reading with Nathan Englander at the PEN Malamud Award ceremony, December 8, 2000. There is also an audiocassette of a WAMU-FM Kaleidoscope interview with Beattie after delivering a commencement address at American University. Joan Mondale is a correspondent.
