New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers, 1823-1999
Title:
New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

Rogers, Issac Newton, fl. 1859-1864. Papers of Isaac Newton Rogers [manuscript] 1859-64.
Title:
Papers of Isaac Newton Rogers [manuscript] 1859-64.
The collection contains letters to his wife, 1862 June 29 (fragment), on a Union patriotic cover, reporting he was unharmed in the last battle (Mechanicsville?) and 1864 May 14 on the verso of a commissary circular reporting that his battalion has lost nearly all its guns and about 175 men (Spotsylvania?), but none of their neighbors, and that they still hold the lines, hoping that "today will wind up this fearful loss of Blood." Also of interest is a reused notebook, 1863-1864, containing records of commissary supplies, which was originally a roll book of Henry M. Ryan, a private in the 32nd N.Y. Infantry. The collection also contains a statement of a muster fine for Rogers, 1859. The collection also contains an account, 1863 October 25, for commutation of rations; a tax form, 1864 May 16, on the number of hogs slaughtered by John White of Orange County; two Orange County, Va., tax receipts, 1864 December 31 and 1865 February 1; and a blank requisition form for officers' supplies.

Title:
United States Sanitary Commission records. Army and Navy Claim Agency archives 1861-1870
The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.

Harvard University. Treasurer. Records of the Treasurer of Harvard University, 1669-2008.
Title:
Records of the Treasurer of Harvard University, 1669-2008.
The Records of the Treasurer of Harvard University document the management and oversight of Harvard's finances including income, expenses, and assets. The records provide an extensive view of Harvard's financial condition as affected by the overall economic climate in the United States, and in particular, highlight the colonial American economic landscape. The collection consists of fifteen series illuminating the progression of Harvard's financial recordkeeping from handwritten fund notes of the mid-seventeenth century to electronically issued reports. The records trace Harvard's transition from a small publicly-funded college to one of the world's largest private universities. The two most complete record series are the Reports and University Accounts, which document the University's core financial activities from 1669 to the present. The most extensive series in the collection, Real Estate, contains photographs, leases, mortgages, and related correspondence resulting from the University's properties in thirteen states, the District of Columbia, and Bermuda. The other series in the collection are less comprehensive. The Records of the Treasurer of Harvard University begin with the tenure of John Richards. Limited records in the form of annual reports are available since 1984.

White, John W. Ledger and exercise books, 1858-1870.
Title:
Ledger and exercise books, 1858-1870.
Collection consists of three volumes. A ledger has entries transfered from a daybook but the accounts still contain considerable detail, goods purchased, prices, and more. Customers paid their bills with cash, goods, and services. The other two volumes were used in the study of bookkeeping. One has the notation, "Book Keeping and Penmanship by Charles White, Middletown, Md., February Seventeenth, 1858." Both books show a variety of account book forms. It is possible that the books were used by more than one student, especially George C. White and Charles Edwin C. White both of whose names appear. Sections include Daybook Double Entry; Journal; Mechanic's Form; and Index to the Ledger. Penmanship practice is evident on some pages.
