The photographs which comprise this collection were assembled by Henry Hobson Richardson and include photographs of sites, structures and works of art in Europe, the United States and Asia. The photographs were arranged thematically by Richardson under a variety of rubrics and include building types, components, materials and geographical location. Although the bulk of the photographs were acquired in the 1870s and 1880s, some are of earlier vintages. Photographers represented include Felton, Baldus, Jackson, as well as a number of established specialty studios (i.e., Fratelli Alinari).

Jones Holding Company, Burn-Boston Battery, Submarine Signal Company, Standard Lessee Corporation, Standard Alcohol Company, St. Louis Cable and Western Railway Company, and St. Louis and Suburban Railway Company. Higginson's interests in Harvard, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Carnegie Institute, and in properties such as Sheldon Farm and Split Rock Forest are also represented. Business correspondents include Alexander Agassiz, Charles Fairchild, John M. Forbes, Henry Lee, Charles E. Perkins, Samuel G. Ward, and Charles W. Subjects include aerial views of Chicago and nearby suburbs, church architecture, commercial architecture, domestic architecture, and public buildings, such as schools, libraries, and post offices. Photos of buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, H.H. Richardson, and Louis Sullivan are included in the collection, as are photographs of some structures built for the World's Columbian Exposition. Most photographs are annotated with the name and address of the structure or, in the case of the aerial views, with the date and the subject of the photograph.

Papers of Franklin Haven include bills and receipts, and letters to Haven from painter George P.A. Healy about his portrait of Daniel Webster. A letter from Healy to Webster is also included. Correspondence includes letters between various individuals involved in Operation Resurrection pertaining to construction of the monument and the discovery of the stones in Indiana. Also included in the collection are various documents relating to Operation Resurrection and the original building and 1911 fire.

Consists of 11 scrapbooks containing approximately 500 photographs of interior and exterior views of houses and public buildings, mostly in northeastern United States (Mass., N.H., R.I., Conn., N.Y. and Pa.). Many of the views are unidentified, though one volume consists primarily of the work of Henry H. Richardson. Six of the volumes contain the signature of Edmund R. Willson and are dated 1898 and 1899. An additional three scrapbooks of photographs of French architecture are signed and dated Sept. and Oct. 1886.

Three albums contain photographs taken by Marian Hooper Adams from 1883-1885. These images include formal and informal portraits of U.S. politicians, various members of the Adams and Hooper families, and family friends. Family members represented include her husband, Henry Adams, Abigail Brooks Adams, Brooks Adams, Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886), Charles F. Adams (1835-1915), Charles F. Adams (1866-1954), George C. Adams, Mary Adams, Mary Ogden Adams, and Robert W. Hooper. Also represented in the portraits are George Bancroft, Rebecca Dodge, William Maxwell Evarts, John Hay, Oliver Wendell Holmes (1841-1935), John La Farge, Thoedore Lyman, Francis Parkman, H.H. Richardson, and Helen Hay Whitney. The albums also include photographs of Washington, D.C., Bladensburg, Md., Old Sweet Springs, Va., and the Adams family homes in Quincy and Beverly Farms, Mass. Title: Albums of correspondence from Stanford White to his family, 1872-1905.

Volumes titled: "Letters from Stanford White, 1883, Wedding Tour, 1884, 1905"; "S.W. Mexican Letters, 1882"; "Early Letters of Stanford White, Illustrated with his original sketches"; and "Stanford White's Letters from Europe, 1878." Letters are primarily to White's mother, Alexina Black Mease White, his father, Richard Grant White, and his wife, Bessie Springs Smith White. The volume of White's letters from Mexico documents an extended trip he took with his elder brother, Richard Mansfield White, to prospect. Also included in the last volume is a letter to White from H. H. Richardson, dated February 22 1878, acknowledging White's resignation from Richardson's firm. Each original manuscript letter is followed by a typed transcription by Lawrence White, unless otherwise noted.
