Rideing, William H. (William Henry), 1853-1918. Papers of William H. Rideing [manuscript], 1886-1911.
Title:
Papers of William H. Rideing [manuscript], 1886-1911.
In a letter, 1886 October 5, Rideing regrets not meeting with an unidentified correspondent and promises to communicate in a week or so. In a letter 1886 November 9 he asks status of the Boston (?) letter and articles on Living American Authors and also discusses at length boyhood series of articles. In an 1898 letter to Messrs. Roberts Brothers [publisher] he mentions separate mailing of a volume of verse by MacKenzie Bell and asks that it be read at the earliest possible moment and on what terms they may be disposed to publish it. In a lettter to [Samuel Sidney] McClure, n.d., Rideing promises that an article on [John Townsend?] Trowbridge will be sent either end of this week or beginning of the next. Two letters, n.d., concern a series of 24 articles on the boyhood of living American authors. Rideing proposes to "begin the series" with some writer who has written for boys, suggesting [Thomas Bailey?] Aldrich or Trowbridge; mentions Mark Twain as a capital subject but notes he probably would refuse to assist in preparation of the article; would accept $15.00 for each 1500 word article. In a letter, 1899, to M[ichael?] S. O'Donnell, Rideing solicits autographs from O'Donnell's collection to extra-illustrate his private copy of the Tennyson memoir. In a 1903 letter to O'Donnell, he thanks him for autographs and sends personal news. In a 1911 letter to O'Donnell, he regrets he has not yet found a Lord Wolsely autograph but will keep on trying.

Title:
Joseph Pennell letter to Mr. William Henry Rideing, 1909 Jan 26.
Pennell details his process of printmaking and explains that he did it from nature 'on the spot' without reversing; therefore the print is reversed. He adds that no one would take the trouble to reverse out of doors and neither Whistler or Haden did so. He facetiously says, that if Aldrich would stand on his head and look at a mirror, his print would be in reverse. He explains that in the James article the print was photographed twice and concludes by saying that Rideing should not write on North American Review stationery because it made him "think that I had become famous and you wanted an article."

Title:
Collection of Gerald John Kane - Literary, 1571-1951.
This collection is what is known as an autograph collection and Kane spent years, not only collecting autographs of famous people on his own, but also acquiring the collections of other autograph seekers. This material spans multiple centuries and formats: from a 15th century manuscript on vellum to a 1951 typewritten letter. The collection includes accounts, letters, photographs, poems, government papers and royal proclamations, signed by, among others, actors and actresses, authors, explorers, kngs, magicians, queens, politicians, scientists, singers, and soldiers. Many of the famous people in this collection are also to be found in other manuscript collections in the Huntington Library. The majority of the material consists of manuscripts, letters and documents written, or signed, by famous people from the 17th-early 20th centuries; some of the material consists of only fragments or signatures, collected for the autograph value only. Among the correspondents are: Lyman Abbott, Zoë Akins, Henry Mills Alden, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, John Douglas Sutherland Campbell (Duke of Argyll), Charles Babbage, Joanna Baillie, Alice Stone Blackwell, John Bright, Richard Temple Brydges (Duke of Buckingham and Chandos), José Francisco Correia da Serra, Rebecca Harding Davis, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Annie Fields, J.T. The collection also includes a small number of Ecclesiastical and Financial documents, and a larger amount of Legal, Military, and Misc. documents.
