Papers consist of correspondence, financial records, writings, photographs, genealogical materials, papers pertaining to the Second Presbyterian Church (Charleston, S.C.) and the Charleston chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and other items. Included are the papers of Augustine Thomas Smythe (1842-1914), James Adger Smyth (1837-1920), Thomas Smyth (1808-1873), A.T.S. Stoney (b. 1894), Louisa Cheves Stoney (1868-1939), the Adger family, and the Smyth family. Genealogical materials (ca. 1920-1930's) include notes, correspondence, and other items collected by Susan Smythe Bennett and her mother Louisa McCord Smythe. Smythe, Louisa McCord, 1845-1928. Louisa McCord Smythe memoir 1850-1877

Title: Louisa McCord Smythe memoir 1850-1877

Recollections of Louisa McCord Smythe is a typewritten transcription of her own reminiscences about life at Lang Syne Plantation (Calhoun County, South Carolina), her family and friends, travels in Europe, and her experiences during the War Between the States and Reconstruction. She was in Columbia, South Carolina in February of 1865, and her memoir mentions a note of warning the family received about Sherman's intentions for the city, and describes the looting and robbery she and her family observed from the window of their house, and the invasion of their home by looting soldiers, who left when General O.O. Howard took the house as his headquarters. She writes of soldiers setting fires with cotton, records her mother's conversation with Gen. Howard in which Mrs. McCord asked "how they as soldiers brought themselves to shell defenseless women and children in their beds," and their glimpse of General Sherman. Her memoir also records her observations about life in Charleston, South Carolina after the war during military occupation, the formation of the "Rifle Clubs," and political unrest. This typed volume includes a preface by her grandson, David McCord Wright.

Also included are letters (1933-1939) from Langdon Cheves M. Smythe, a missionary in Japan, concerning the Japanese people, missionary work in Japan, his voyage by sea to Higashi Ku, Nagoya, and other matters; and correspondence (1929-1938) between John Bennett and cousin Amey Smyth in Detroit (Mich.) concerning his writings, the Detroit Civic Theatre (Foundation?), and her poetry. Other items include poems by Amey Smyth, clippings, and excerpts (n.d.) from Civil War era letters (March 1865) of Louisa McCord Smythe concerning her experiences at the close of the Civil War and events in Columbia (S.C.).

The bulk of the correspondence is with his wife and deals with his service, 1863-1865, in the Confederate Army. Especially interesting are descriptions of the evacuations of Charleston and Columbia; an account of the retreat of Hardee's army to North Carolina; the high morale of the Confederate troops; Sherman's manner of waging war and his generous surrender terms; running the northern blockade into Charleston, 1862; and a trip to Lake City, Fl., 1864. The collection also contains a description of the battle of Stono Ferry in 1779; letters of Feilden and his wife Julia McCord Feilden, Sussex, England, to Louisa McCord, Charleston, S.C., discussing family matters, the Civil War and World War I; and an unidentified photograph of cavalrymen, ca. 1898?

Smythe (originals and typewritten transcriptions) includes much of his Civil War correspondence, including his letters written from camps in Secessionville (James Island, S.C.) and the observation post at St. Michael's Church steeple in Charleston (S.C.) concerning battles, the bombardment of Charleston, family matters, and other topics. Correspondents include his sister-in-law Jane A. Adger, his father Thomas Smyth, and other family members. Family correspondence (1866-1922) concerns family matters, the 1886 earthquake in Charleston (S.C.), the submarine Hunley (1898-1899), the Vanderhorst house on Kiawah Island (S.C.), and other matters. There are many letters of condolence on the death of Augustine Thomas Smythe, including one from Benjamin Tillman. Correspondents include his wife Louisa M. Smythe, his sister Sarah A.
