Charleston, S.C. attorney and South Carolina state senator. He was the son of Rev. Thomas Smyth (1808-1873) and Margaret Milligan Adger (1807-1884), and as a young adult he changed the spelling of his name to Smythe. He was in active military service throughout the Civil War. His wife was Louisa Rebecca McCord (1845-1928), daughter of David James McCord (1797-1855) and Louisa Susanna Cheves.
